Hi

I would like to know how many people want these weapons. How many people want these to use in this nice game. I know this team have a lots of work with this good game but I hope when they'll have enough time for news, they won't miss these weapons. That's all.

Idea from mechwarrior 4.

Hi Ermach.

welcome to the boards.
First you should edit the poll...disable the checkbox - allow multiple answers

For your questions...while there are those weapons in the lore...they are not part of the actual time line of MWO.
If MWO would have been placed in the time line after the actions of MW4 Mercs - we would have all those toys.

Long tom is fine, I don't remember other weapons in MW4.

Railgun = Gauss Rifle.

Plasma Cannons are Clan Tech, it's basically a long-range Heat Generation weapon. (think Flamer that fires like a PPC).

WHY MUST EVERYONE INCORRECTLY ASSUME GAUSS RIFLES AND RAILGUNS ARE THE SAME?!?!

Also, No to all except Long Tom.

Railgun Defined: A railgun is an electrically powered electromagnetic projectile launcher based on similar principles to the homopolar motor. A railgun comprises a pair of parallel conducting rails, along which a sliding armature is accelerated by the electromagnetic effects of a current that flows down one rail, into the armature and then back along the other rail.

Gauss Rifle Defined: A coilgun (Gauss Rifle) is a type of projectile accelerator consisting of one or more coils used as electromagnets in the configuration of a linear motor that accelerate a ferromagnetic or conducting projectile to high velocity. In almost all coilgun configurations, the coils and the gun barrel are arranged on a common axis.

The difference is that a "Railgun" uses Rails, a "Gauss Rifle" uses a coil. The principal of using electromagnetic acceleration of an inert slug is the same.

So stuff that in your Rage-Pipe and smoke it. :)

Same principle, yes. That doesn't mean they're the same thing, though.

As others have said only Long Tom should be available to IS in 3050, while a rail gun is a gauss rifle.

Welcome Ermach

Fear not for Long Tom is going to be with us in the future. I discovered this when I posted a similar thread specifically about this weapon a few months back.

Other nice weapons that will be joining later include the LBX20 Scattershot.

About as different as a semi-automatic rifle vs. a semi-automatic pistol.

Their gas-operated systems might be different, but they both fire bullets in a semi-automatic fashion.

So a GAU-8 is the same as an M16? The principal is the same, right? Just the mechanics are different.

For the record, Railguns and Gauss guns are both insanely impractical; however while the Gauss is impractical due to huge energy requirements, the railgun is impractical due to its use as a weapon virtually requiring enough energy to destroy the rails in pretty short order. Would be possible, but the weapon would have limiting constraints on how many times it could fire other than ammunition.

Don't know what a Longtom is, but Plasma cannons, while cool, are also pretty damn impractical due to physics. Plasma cannons would logically be gigantic Flamers. Meaning you'll cook yourself even faster.

That's reductio ad absurdum and you know it. The only similarity between the M16 and the Gau-8 is the way that the rounds themselves work.

The M-16 is an Air-Cooled, Gas Operated, Magazine-Fed Assault Rifle. The GAU-8 is an Air-Cooled, Hydraulically powered, Belt-Fed Vehicle Mounted Weapon.

They aren't anything alike.

The principals of Coil vs. Rail are exactly the same.

Actually, the principals are very different. The motive force is the same; as is the type of projectile, and that's about it.

Coil guns require either a charge-up time, or a constant charge being held; it achieves its goal by shutting coils off as the projectile reaches them. The projectile does not touch the coils.

Rail guns can be fired virtually instantaneously, but require the projectile to be touching the rails; it is fired simply by applying current to the rails; they are not powered otherwise.

My comparison is exactly the same as yours; the projectile and motive force are similar; the mechanics are different.

Right... so one Electromagnetically Powered Slug Launcher is different from the other Electromagnetically Powered Slug Launcher ... great talk.

Yep, in the same way that one gunpowder-powered bullet-launcher is different from the other gunpowder-powered bullet-launcher.

Should we also not have an AC20 because we have an AC2? They can't possibly be less similar than a gauss rifle and rail gun.

Really? Which one is the Infantry based, and which one is Belt fed?

Exactly. They have similar motive force and projectile, but they are very different weapons.

So is a Trebuchet and a Catapult. Both are considered rock-lobbing siege weapons, what is your point?

My point is that discounting the railgun because we have a gauss rifle on the basis that they have similar motive force and projectile is foolish, as they can still function in-game in very different ways.

More importantly, what is your point?

In-game, they would both function the same way. Fire slug at a high speed, Cooldown, repeat.
