99% of the time if I do it, it's to triple-check what weapons I have on what keybinds for which mechs. (I have several joystick buttons for weapons, and I'm not always 100% sure if I have a given weapon on the top group or the lower group.)

It is actually pretty easy to make out weapon fire before you even see the enemy mech/s if you are in a postion to do so ...laser and ppc fire is pretty bright. Now you know.

Well, I've never been able to see it from across the map at the beginning of a match unless the people are shooting up in the air.

I am not talking about the begining, but when teams start advancing.

Heck, it is not uncommon for my teammates to hear from me: "laser fire in E4"

Shooting buildings and the ground is fun and makes pew pew sounds and pretty lights. You sound like a no fun-ster.

Hitting Esc and selecting options will still pass your mouse-clicks through to the game - I had a friend drop in for the first time in a month or so yesterday, and he dropped without changing any settings. So I told him to hit Esc and change them from there, and he almost cored a team-mate with his AC/20, and every time he clicked somewhere his weapons would fire.

I had to apologize for him (since he couldn't see the abuse he was taking in team chat) and explain the situation, then he apologized in person once he got back into the game. He was rather miffed at having shot a quarter of his precious AC/20 ammo needlessly though.

So that's another thing to consider, not everyone that fires on a team-mate is doing so intentionally.

Often, at least on the rare occasions it happens from me, is that I have launched the game in windowed mode, then while waiting I got back to reading an article or looking at ****, then all of a sudden I notice the countdown has commenced and I rush to click the MWO screen, usually I use the middle button to do this, but sometimes I left click thinking the countdown is still going, and bam, dead commando.

I swear it is an accident that I alpha'd the commando/spider in the back.

I don't have this problem - I can tab back into game and not fire weapons. Do it all the time when switching around in TS channels for Marik Madness.

I tried to use testing grounds to test my heat build up, weapon groupings, and heat to weapon grouping efficiency, but after a while, it gets annoying to find my test results on frozen city night three times in a row. So, I do what I always did, I point down at the ground, and face away from my teammates. Why something even as simple as that is too difficult for some players is beyond me.

'Tab'ing out and back in again with a mouse click (like if you want to change TS channels), often causes the weapons on group1 to fire. People tend to click back into game and not tab back in.

I do it sometimes at spawn just to see how I like my groups and other times because I like the sound of my lasers. As long as the persons not shooting into the air or at someone I don't really see the problem.

I can click back into the game and not fire weapons.

I am not sure what is different between my own experiences, and those listed in these discussions, but the only time my weapons accidentally fire into a friendly mech's back at game launch, is if I accidentally press "1" instead of "~" (My Push-to-talk key for TS), or if Stingr4y is standing in front of me.

There was one time I managed to press "\" instead of R-CTRL (don't ask how, I have no idea either.) Dual ER-PPC's and a Gauss right into the other 'Hawk on TS with me :)

I draw giant Zs in the ground and on hills because I'm Zeh. And lasers are fun.

When I do it, it's because I'm bored or I'm testing heat.

I'm not going to ungroup, annoy my friends just to go to testing round every time I swap to a new mech.

That and its cool being able to write the first 3 letters of my name in the snow.

Though one time I alphad a team mate on purpose. Because in the last 3 matches -in the same day- I'd been qued with this person, he had rammed me at one point or another, when it was a totally avoidable collision. The guy died, via the same section I alpahed. I smiled.

When I test I fire my weapons into the ground or a building, away from a team mate and away from the enemy position. Unless some *** hat kept ramming me. Then I let him have it.

- Because those lasers are so shiny and I love the beat of a machine gun when I ride into battle. Come to think of it, that thought might not be too far-fetched, which is kind of scary in and of itself.

This, and the fact that I play in window mode which leads to unwanted wapon fire when click the window in the wrong place.

I heard that the Testing Grounds doesn't factor in Pilot upgrades yet (like cool run, heat containment). So I'll often fire my weapons into the ground to check exactly how much heat it generates on a specific map so I know how much I have to play with before I shutdown.

Nor does it factor in the eliting bonuses, at least not for me - never see my mechs going the proper "speed tweak" speeds in testing grounds so I am betting the other bonuses aren't factored in as well.

I thought it was because some folks figured out that if you wasted some of that precious ballistics ammo, right at the start, the reduced weight of the Mech made if run faster. lol :)

Exactly. It's harder to enjoy the pewpewiness of it while you're trying not to die...

I also enjoy shooting the little cars on river city and imagining them getting blown into tiny bits. :(
