there's a chat bug that will make you fire accidentally this patch.

other than that there's no excuse, for testing everything should be done in TESTING grounds.

testing grounds seem to have rules of their own. there is a faster fire rate but other special mech skills dont work.
so testing grounds is not fully realistic - gamewise. if i have heat upgrade i cant really test my mech now can i?

Young mechwarriors have a problem with premature weapons firing!

We had a guy in a match that kept spraying his flame thrower all over the place. His defense was that it didn't cause damage (which of course is wrong, it does even if minor damage)

Testing heat, I have lots of mechs and am not going to drop in testing grounds before every match.

That said, I can aim away from friendly mechs.

Exactly this, in all particulars.

Basically a salvo or two to remind myself exactly how the mech behaves on that particular map heat wise, if I haven't dropped with it recently. However, I try check to make sure I'm not gonna have friendlies crossing my line of fire when I do it. Very rarely I'll have a fast mech do something beyond my control (such as entering the path of a laser that's already firing) but I try to keep that from happening by keeping the danger path short (firing at the ground close by or at a high moutain peak so the shots pass over any possible friendlies. My instance of "targetless" friendly fire is exceptionally low (but not zero... like I said, sometimes crap happens, and when it does, it is my fault).

TAG is a different story. I'll pew pew the pew out of that pewpew prior to the pew pew that matters without regard to what's in front of it.

One that no one has mentioned that occassionally happens to me..if I'm playing on my 14" laptop, the side of my thumb rests awefully close to the mousepad and can accidentally trigger the selected weapon group. It's very rare though. I almost always forget to not click back into the game if I alt+tab out as well.

I only found out yesterday that if you try to tweak your options near the start of a match you fire your M1 firegroup everytime you click on something...

Let's say I have 2 lasers in left hand and 2 in right hand. I wanna bind them to different buttons. I could do this in training grounds of course, but why bother. So I fire them off one at a time to see which of those 4 lasers are left and which are right. Or is there some way of knowing this otherwise?

I am not talking about the begining, but when teams start advancing.

Especially in a slow mech, I start to advance right away so as not to lag behind. So I bind my weapons while moving on to the front.

There are two times when I do this.
1) When I alt tab and click back in, I occasionally fire, very rarely hitting a teammate(only once I can actually think of).
2) Since I use only lasers, it doesn't waste ammo, and firing 2-3 alphas allows me to "calibrate" myself to this exact mech setup and map. Of course, I take extra care to insure no one is in my sights when I do this, I don't think I've ever actually caused team damage doing this.

I get the chat bug quite a bit, where the weapons fire while I am typing. I haven't hit anyone yet, but I try to keep comms to a minimum just in case.

Because I bought my Mechs, I bought my weapons and I'll fire them whenever it strikes me.

I'll stop firing off random shots at the beginning of matches when you start buying my mechs, weapons and ammo.

The chat bug is why I never touch the keyboard or mouse until the start-up sequence engages. And if I'm placed behind someone, I wait until that is over also.

There is a desperate need for more intelligent, witty players such as the OP. That would solve half of the problems with the game immediately.

1) We're always going to be primates, so don't hold your breath for us to evolve past it.
2) I like how you said you can understand heat testing "to a degree".
3) The quoted answer is the most likely. That's why you see people firing into the air so that even the other team can see the lights shooting across the map. Alternatively, they draw pictures in the snow or sand.

There is an old bug where if you alt-tab back to the game, it sometimes does not 'lock' your cursor to the game window. So later if you don't notice the cursor drifting off the game window, and you mouse click to fire, suddenly a different program pops up to cover the screen.

This bug doesn't happen if you click on the game screen instead of alt-tabbing. So a lot of beta players got into the habit of clicking back during the countdown. Sometimes they miss the countdown and their weapons go off.

Heat testing my energy complement is much easier in game than in the Testing Grounds because I have feedback for the map I am on instead of wasting 5 minutes just to get the right map to test on using the Testing Grounds. Personally, I always check to make sure my line of fire is clear, I have nothing particularly fast near me, I am out of cap and I am shooting at the ground nearest my 'Mech. I find this minimizes (not so) friendly fire incidents and shooting at the ground does not give the other team any means to make any sort of accurate guess as to where my own team is headed.

Sometimes I just test how the heat feels on a particular map. Sometimes I have a OCD need to retest my weapon grouping before I actually need them (yes, I sometimes return from the garage to recheck if I've locked my door), Sometimes I actually mess with the groupings... And finally sometimes I just like shooting rocks. **** it, we play this game because we like shooting big guns from giant robots...

I haven't really memorized, and don't plan to memorize, my heat levels for all my weapon groups/mechs on every map so I check them at the start. I usually aim for the ground or a building, almost never up in the air. I don't see why I would go to testing grounds to heat check my usual mechs.

First off, it's not like they don't know where we are... B)

If they continue to do it, then I have an issue with them. I do it every now and then at the start just to draw stuff on the ground out of boredom if I have lasers.

I NEVER waste ammo though... that's just full ******, especially since we have the training grounds they can test on.

IF they shoot me or a teammate and they are moving, not just coming out of the menu screen and an accidental oops...

Well... put it this way, I open up on them with everything I have as I have 0 tolerance for friendly fire. If you can't control your weapons you're too stupid to be on my team.
