I do it to test heat as you suggest. I don't need to boot up the testing grounds to fire one shot. Basically, once I have messed around a bit in the Mechlab I just need to fire one salvo to figure out what percentage heat it generates on the map I am playing. That allows me to work out how conservatively I need to play for the rest of the match.
It's one shot, usually lasers, never towards a friendly and never in any way which will give up our position (not that it really matters that early in the match, since spawn points are fixed).

First of all, I do it to test heat. I want to be sure how much heat every energy weapon group produces (not gonna waste ammo on landscape and I run energy-heavy most of the time anyways) and how fast it dissipates. The testing grounds are no alternative. I can neither be bothered to re-enter the TG until I had every map, nor can I be bothered to exactly remember the values of all maps on all my mechs.
The second reason is that I like to draw on the landscape with my lasers. With the different hardpoints and the different movement speed of arms and torso, sometimes really nice stuff turns out.

I have no problem with people testing out their heat balance weapon grouping, etc., but it's a real pain to get hit by friendly fire before even seeing the enemy. Just don't shoot me in the back, please
. . .
