It would be cool to see new armor types for MWO, such as:

Reflective armor
New type of armor designed to defeat lasers. It's not so good against ballistic or missile weapons. Reflective armor is best used in colder climates, when most Battlemechs will be using energy weapons, or when you are expecting a lot of energy weapons on your opponents.

Reactive armor
New type of armor designed to defeat ballistic weapons. It's not so good against beam or missile weapons. Reactive armor is best used in hotter climates, when most Battlemechs will be using ballistic weapons due to heat build-up.

Thoughts/Opinions?

Well sure why not... But when it says not so good against beam/ballistic or missle does it mean no extra bonus or is it actually weaker than standard armor?

I would only implement these after we have gotten everything else in place, and I mean everything else. Clan tech, community warfare, DX11, and everything else still waiting to be implemented.

It would create a huge issue I believe as far as balancing goes. Once all weapon systems are where they should be then implement armor and ammunition types.

They're worthless in the game currently. There's no way to know what you'll be facing ahead of time, so all it would do is arbitrarily punish people once in a while.

As much as I would enjoy mixing things up, both those armor types apparently don't come into play until later in the timeline.

isn't that what they had in MW4? or am i wrong about that lol... im definitely with you though i would think reactive armor would work against missiles just as well as ballistics.

Well I guess that's a decent reason not to. But they still could just call it something different or maybe one day we will have a time skip.

After some further research, it looks like there may actually be timeline armor types available.

In about 13 years, both will be available.

Sad truth is tho, no matter how they tried to push em in fluff, since most mech forces carried a mix of weapon types, their very specialization is what makes them inferior to standard armor in most cases.

If they had ever implemented them intelligently, allowing them to act as normal armor, but with a bonus damage soak to their specialized nature, then we would finally have had an advanced armor worth the weight/critical concessions required.

i don't really understand the design of these. like if you get reactive armor. do you just hope that the enemy uses a lot of ballistics? Isn't there like a 1/2 chance of it being lasers or ballistics

Meh, reactive armor was pretty good, the actual chance of the negative effect being triggered on any given hit was 1 in 1296. So yes, it was entirely possible for the RNG to take a steaming dump on you, but in general practice it was vastly superior to standard armor especially if your pilots had edge to force a reroll on a TAC roll.

Same for reflective....keep the mech in the backfield so you don't need to worry about physical attacks, and the only real trade you're making is enhanced vulnerability against armor piercing ammo for half energy damage.

That being said, it's only a 13 year wait for reactive, reflective comes around in "only" 8 years. I'll be rocking that on the field in 2021!

The only way this feature will be useful is if a player will ever be able to pick what environment he wants to play in. you mention that on snow maps there will be laser heavy mechs. Not tru! how is a pilot supposed to know to load his boat with lasers if he has no idea what map he'll be on? that happens to me all the time and what do i get? caustic valley...but back to the point. the only way we'll ever see people dynamically changing their weapons that quickly (for every new round) and changing armor will be when we can choose what environment to play in.

But if they made it so that you got a bonus against lasers but no negative vs missles and ballistics then it could work. Basically spend some tonnage and maybe some crit slots for extra protection vs certain weapons. Yeah its a bit of a gamble since you don't know what weapons you will come up against but since nobody knows that, you usually see a decent bit of every weapon in every game. Or maybe at some point we will know what map we are going to before hand.

So, just about double the amount of damage a light mech can take, by reducing the top speed by about 12 Kph and doubling the armor weight?

Nah. Don't think so. Lights can already be hard enough to kill.

Why the armor we have now does not work? and Ferro does little to change this fact. So adding more armor types would be just cosmetic. Plus we cant save builds in mechlab yet so rebuilding your mech for every few matches is already a pain in da aassss.

That's not really true. As certain builds become popular it is very easy to anticipate what you will fight on the field.

Splatcats and LRMs for example. Right now it would be Ballistics. After state rewind it was lasers.

It could be a possible buffer to Flavor of the month builds.
