For various reasons my eyesight is not the hottest and I would like to disable DoF. I have turned post-processing down to low in game, but it still persists somewhat.

I know devs have stated that editing user.cfg is permitted (http://mwomercs.com/...62#entry2101562) and I have added the line:

r_DepthOfField = 0

in the user.cfg in my MWO folder. The file is otherwise empty. However, this does not seem to work at all. Am I doing something wrong in terms of how to disable DoF?

Hi,

[Redacted]

This will allow you to use your:
r_DepthofField = 0

In your user.cfg

I hate DoF too, Makes my eyes hurt too

Edit:

Hey All, After some testing the change I provided doesn't work (pretty sure it used to) But I did find a post processing slider in the Advance graphics settings which turns the DoF effect down.

modification of other files then the user.cfg is prohibited

^ may work, haven't tried that.

I know some of the settings in user.cfg are based off of ranges, so 0 may be out of it's range parameters. I say start with a known figure, like mid 70s and work from there.

Is this allowed? Seems like certain players may gain an advantage by disabling and distance blurring.

Not sure if it's technically allowed, as you have to comment it out in the second file, But it is using the User config to set things so,

Plus plenty of games have an off switch for it.

My User Config looks like this:

cl_fov = 79
r_colorgrading = 0 (commented out in mentioned file) Makes everything slightly brighter, its nice.
r_motionBlur = 0
r_TexturesFilteringQuality = 0
r_UseEdgeAA = 0
r_DepthofField = 0 (commented out in mentioned file)
r_PostProcessEffectsFilters = 0
r_PostProcessEffects = 0
r_PostMSAA = 0
r_HDRRendering = 0
r_SSAO = 1
r_FSAA = 1
r_UsePOM = 0
r_TexMaxAnisotropy = 16

Got me some extra FPS, which was nice. and I don't like blurring in games, so off they go.

Or also there is more than one (3) entry in the sys_spec file

PS: I am unsure how many of those actually do anything

Didnt work for me either with only adding the line. The only way i could make it work:

1. use the files from this thread
http://mwomercs.com/...sys-spec-files/

2. Use one of these two user.cfg's and edit the line inthere.

By comparing these files you can tweak the user.cfg into something inbetween and they dont include any commands the game has problems with.

[edit] Just using a user.cfg without the files, or the files with an empty user.cf that only contains the r_DepthOfField = 0 line, doesnt work for me. Thanks again to the people in the linked thread for helping me getting rid of DOF while keeping the game looking good. My eyesight is bad to and i strongly recommend to use SweetFX with the lumasharpen filter to improve upon the visuals even more.

I use SweetFX and the film grain removal tool with this edited user.cfg.

NO.

It is a clear violation of the TOS (they have said dozens of time to leave the.pak files alone). It is only to be done at your own risk, that risk being the deletion of your account.

That said, I know the difference between the 2 settings and that the advice given was probably given in good faith. I still have a very hard time seeing how openly advocating "illegal" modification of the game files for a marked visibility improvement over someone that obeys the TOS is not openly advocating cheating....

This is not intended as an accusation, rather I would like someone to explain to me how changing files to gain an advantage others do not have is NOT cheating, and thereby not grounds for an outright ban....

Yes it is.

http://mwomercs.com/...wo-game-client/

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Can I change my user.cfg file?

A: Yes. This is the only file open to user modification. We understand that at times there can be a need to modify the user.cfg, for example certain joystick configurations are not fully implemented on the in-game options screen and may require manual configuration through this file. As long as you are editing the user.cfg file in good faith, this is not a concern. As always, Support will not be able to troubleshoot or support clients that have modifications to this file. Users can request via Support ticket or forum post that the developers open additional parameters in the user.cfg, and we will determine if the request is reasonable.

LULZ

Is there a single aspect of this game where there isn't a post from one of the PTB that directly contradicts another post from one of the PTB?

I modified mine, as Depth of field (and motion blur) gives me a head ache,

I did have to Mod something not the user.cfg, so its probably against the rules

If they ban me they have lost a paying customer, their loss really. there are many other games that I can play that don't have DoF, or motion blur.

Like Mechwarrior 2-4,

Those posts are IDENTICAL, in fact they are the exact same post. There is no contradiction. There is merely a disconect between the question being asked and the answer that was given.

Any modification, to any file besides the user.cfg, is not allowed.

Any discussion, if this is good for the game, will now stop.

??? Can you say this in English, German, French, or Spanish, please, or form an actual sentence?

Sorry, but, not all of us are so Uber-1337 that we uNd3r574nD every grunt and half written word, especially when somebody is using slang in our second language, much less our fourth. Makes it hard to communicate with people who don`t consider their own words to be worth the effort of being understood ;)

Thanks all, sounds like it is against TOS because it requires modifying another file than the user.cfg. A shame really!

So what was done? After they were taken, the Brightness was lowered by 5 points, Contrast was raised by 5 points, and Saturation was raised by 5 points. Simple adjustments to your monitor, or to the game's graphics settings within the game, can replicate these results, once we're allowed to touch our brightness and gamma settings.

There is no need to do anything that would get you banned. Although it would be nice to have access to those in-game controls (Gamma, Saturation, and Brightness. Perhaps Contrast since I know Gamma and Contrast are not the same) so I won't have to make these adjustments to future videos just to get the game to look this good, when I know it can do that on its own.

From what I could tell, DoF did little to nothing if I didn't also turn Post Processing -all the way down-. Post Processing is what puts 95% of the blur on distant objects (for "feel", I'd guess).. and since it's a settings slider they gave me access to in the UI, I see no reason not to turn it all the way off.

I also set custom brightness/contrast settings in my graphics driver and told my computer to use my driver settings instead of application settings. As the pics just above my post show, a bit more brightness and more contrast makes a very pleasing difference in how the game looks (and I see no way in which that gives someone an advantage since all cards/drivers render differently and all monitors have different looks/feels to them.. setting up your rig so things look "good" to you may well give you exactly what the devs are seeing on their high end "dev" systems).

I had to override shutdown to quote these two particular masterpieces back to back, two banks of heat-sinks just pooled out from under an exhaust port and I better go take car of that.
