To be fair to PGI (which some of you might not be interested in):
1. The 8 vs. 7 matches is due to timeout on matchmaking. PGI stated, IIRC, that there is not to be more than a 2 minute wait for games. So if the matchmaker can't find another clown with a ELO in the range even after broadening it, 7 clowns will drop. This is done for user experience, so it's a tradeoff.
2. The immediate disconnect may not be anything to do with PGI. It may be the disconnector exploiting the system to avoid a map. This will be particularly true for River Night and to a lesser extent, Frozen, and maybe Tourmaline (due to the high frequency lately). This exploit will cause the user to disconnect/ crash to client when a map he exploited is set for the game he joined, and has little to do with PGI's server.
For a fair user experience why can't we choose if we would rather abort than play with 7 vs 8? Why can't we opt to wait for a fair 8 on 8 if we want?
So there's a way to turn off alpine? how and where do I sign up?

To be very honest, I'm not having that much fun under ELO. My usual group includes a good player, so his ELO brings us up into the punching bag range. That makes it less fun to group, which defeats the purpose.
And that's why Elo match making sucks... because before it was always beneficial to group. Now it is usually better to play alone (because people you grouped with before probably have inflated Elo scores).

Alone, I get some good games then a whole world of hurt. Then some decent games (close, not stomping over people). It's ok fun, but the looming thought of a streak of curbstomps is always around the corner.
Yes, I'd admit ELO did its job. But I also submit that by doing its job, ELO kind of detracts a bit from my enjoyment. Not enough to make me stop at this point, but its effect is felt.. and somewhat unwelcomed.
If by doing its job you mean that Elo is there to punish good players and make everyone lose more games (rather than just the terribad losing over and over and over again until they get better).
