So, an overkill refers to a shot that not only kills an opponent, but also wastes excess resources(heat, ammo, caliber) in doing so. One example is hitting infantry with a ppc.
In MWO the only enemies right now are mechs, and so there's little to no possibility that an alpha-strike on a mech will result in overkill. If it does(headshot with 3ppc), there are not enough enemies to make such an occurrence even a slight hassle, much less a reason to run a mech with smaller alpha-strikes in exchange for more heat or ammo.
Taking on a column of small tanks, for instance, might be more efficient with 2 LRM15's rather than 2 LRM20's.
So I'm curious what you guys think,
How will 12v12 effect the size of alpha-strikes in builds?
How will the introduction of vehicles/infantry effect this?
Not to be a stickler, but 3 PPCs won't headshot a mech. There's 18 points of armor and 16 of internals (up from 3 from the TT). You need 34pts of damage to headshot a mech, whether it is an Atlas or Commando. Unless of course they don't have the full 18 armor.
In addition a Tank in BattleTech is slightly tougher then you give it credit. Some are capable of shrugging off 2 LRM15s. Especially if they were ever placed in MWO with the double armor values. Something like a Demolisher would be an utter terror on the battlefield. Hitting something smaller such as a Swiftwind or Harasser would be quite tough.
