Wolfhound. Good armor, no real weakness. Highly capable, my favorite 'mech.

Second choice would be Firestarter, the -M variant. Drops the flamers for more practical armor, very good backstabber.

The Commando is also good, albeit a bit explosion-happy. It's really cheap and has lots of firepower.

None of them are particularly good scouts, but scouting is boring and best left to VTOLs and hovertanks anyway.

lets see my light lance in TT is a pair of STGs (1 is the 2x ML the other is the R variant) a Valk-QA, and an Urbie...lol havent run it yet to see how terrible it actually is...but i have a lot of respect for the Hussar, and the Firestarter.

Panther
while i love the Panther and it was my mech of choice in Table Top, that was TT and with its lack of speed, I cant see it lasting long in a game like this. However... i would gladly take the Wolfhound in a hot second.

Within the bounds of your outline: Wolfhound WLF-1. I am not a big fan of ammunition based weaponry on light chassis due to the low armor offering next to no protection against an ammo hit. Aside from that (no ammo worries is a really big thing for me, give me CASE and then it becomes less so) the Wolfhound has decent acceleration, a respectable top speed (for the era), and good armor (really as much as you can cover it in) for a light design.

My light lance for TT is 2 Wolfhounds, a Spider and a Commando as my light missile support. Love this lance. And it works great in competition play.

always been partial to the wolfhoud, no need to worry about ammo and can smoke most other light mechs in a fight.

my thoughts exactly, plus it has a distinct look that (might) be a little frightening for infantry/ground support to see. (not that we have to worry about those in MWO yet...)

We're eight years (IIRC) too early for the Owens and four years too early for the Tarantula.

Valkyrie. Not the fastest by any means, but packs a mean punch against scouts of it's size and smaller. A couple of LRM volleys can absolutely ruin a light 'Mechs day.

I guess I'm going to have to pick the Wolfhound WLF-2, just for its firepower and armor; although the Raven 3L is a close second for it's suppoet/recon abilities.

Raven 3L (3048) is probably my favorite in the class for this time period: ECM; Beagle Active Probe; Narc Missile Beacon; TAG . . . sure, its armament is pretty poor, it only has 5t of armor, and its speed is just average, but I think those Capellans are on to something with the e-warfare Raven.

I'm leaving out many excellent Star League 'mechs used by Comstar during this time.

Kneejerk is to say Urbie.

Would probably go Spider though. I love Urbies, but not all the time.

My favored pre 3050 light mech is the Wolfhound WLF-1, a 35 ton mech from 3025 with good armor for its class. It's a real classic armed with 1x Large Laser and 4x Medium Lasers so doesn’t need to worry about ammo usage or internal ammo explosions. The WLF-2 model from 3052 replaced the LL with an ER Large Laser and added double heat sinks making it even deadlier at range.

Wolfhound 2, 35 Tons, Base Movement 6/9/0, Weapons: ER Large Laser, 4 Medium Lasers. Mainly designed to hunt and kill House Kurita Panthers, it does its designed role very well. With decent speed, it can chase down and destroy a good portion of Light Mechs of its timeframe. It can also put a hurting on Medium Mechs. The only drawback I believe it has is a lack of Jump Jets.

Honorable Mention goes to the Ostscout 7K, 35 Tons, Base Movement 8/12/8, Weapons: TAG. This Mech can manuever to a hidden position in order to direct its lance's fire support and then get out of Dodge fast. It performs its job very well, but the attrition rate must be horrible. The Ostscout is sometimes used to punish MechWarriors who shoot off their mouths too often on how good they are in a Mech. Well, the more I think about thisMech, the more I don't like my honorable mention Mech so never mind. I will have to think of another Light Mech.

Javelin P, 30 Tons, Base Movement 6/9/6, Weapons: SRM-6, 2 Streak SRM-2's. Good movement and got to love those paired Streaks. No ammo wasted with them. The SRM-6 provides a healthy punch for a light Mech. Plus I really like what the Federated Suns do with it in 3060.

Javelin. Used as a light support mech, with 6/9/6 movement, and twin SRM6's to finish a damaged opponent off. Not a scout at all. Also good vs armor and VTOL's.

No love for the Hornet, eh? It's a quirky little 'Mech, that's for sure. I'd take one, or barring that, a Mongoose or Panther.

Venom SDR-9K is a damned fine light mech, unfortunately it doesn't exist yet.

So I'm settling for the next best thing the Spider SDR-7M.

As you can see I'm not a friend of undersized mediums. I'm rather going for ultramobility.

I would go with the MON-86. Mostly because I like the look of the Mongoose. But it doesn't hurt that it has a Light PPC, can move at about 150km/h and does it all with style.

The only downside is the XL engine.

I'd drop the ER Small Laser in the torso and the Small Laser in the head (maybe mount a flamer in there to make it a fire breathing Mongoose) and switch out the Beagle Acitve Probe for a Guardian ECM Suite to make myself even more of a nuisance.
