This is serious business, I think it needs a poll.

I'm calling 75% chance of them being a gimmick, 5% chance of them being useful, and 20% chance of PGI accidentally programming them to do something hilarious.

I really really really really dislike the idea of artillery/airstrikes in the game modes we have now. Not looking forward to this.

I'm going with initially hilarious.

Airstrikes are like AmEx Don't leave home without them.

The Jagermech should get a AA bonus. I would be very impressed if you could shoot the airstrike down.

The thing I do like is, now you're put in a quandary about what to fill your module slots with.

BRING ON MORE CONSUMABLES!!

My concern, especially with base capping, is that lights will be able to hide under the Oil Rig building. I'm also anxious to know if there will be some sort of visual or audio warning that bombardment is incoming.

I guess we'll see

Splash damage would invalidate that tactic. Also, I heard that there will supposedly be a smoke signal to indicate an incoming barrage.

This honestly just seems like some kind of excuse to not properly defend one's base in Assault. "Friendly base is being captured..." "NUCLEAR LAUNCH DETECTED!"

I'm psyched about running my sneaky little ecm scouts onto ridge crests and dropping ordinance on a defensive line.

I can finally start to use my scouts as actual scouts.

I am more concerned by the super fast time from target area to impact.

It probably means that fat, slow mechs will get shafted hardcore and that zippy fast mechs will get to laugh their butts off while the nuclear launches all miss them. :(

I'm looking forward to it. I foresee several consequences.
  • Legging + Airstrike on Assaults becomes a viable tactic.
  • Mech pilots will learn not to travel in a predictable straight line for 4-5 seconds.
  • A change in mech builds. Ammunition in legs will become a riskier proposition. Skimping on leg armour will be questioned (I suspect artillery / air strikes might effect legs over other body parts).
  • Jump Jetting out of strike zones becomes an escape tactic.

Except you need to have LOS to do the airstrike since it cannot be called via the "B" screen. So that legged assault is still shooting back at you. Airstrikes I foresee will be used primarily by the fast scouts with ECM that can get high up and hide and drop them in on a group of mechs entrenched.

The power balance just changed a bit.

There are only a few mech that can sport 4 module slots.

Spider-5V (lol)
Jenner-K
Raven -3L(!)
Yen Lo Wang
Atlas D-DC

If artillery and airstikes are at all effective a few "worst" variants just became a bit more tempting.

My Cicada approves of now being a serious threat. George might actually stop being a hanger queen (My Founder's Atlas is still my ultimate hanger queen, not a single game in it yet) see some time outside.

Or use them to counter pop tarts.

These are not kill/damage weapons. There are area denial and disruption weapons. Flush an enemy from cover. Counter a pop tart. Keep you opponent busy so you can cross open ground. Cut off a retreating mech.

The usefulness of these items is their threat of damage, not the damage itself.

I'm sorry but the Devs beg to differ. Here's a quote straight from the patch notes.

Quote

Here is a pro tip: Use them for when a light is capping your base on Alpine and save yourself a walk back to your spawn!

This means air strikes will have to be stupidly overpowered in order for PUGs to use them effectively or they will only be effective when premades launch coordinated strikes aka the rich get richer and the bad stay bad. Either way its going to mess with the game and not in a positive way until people adjust. This, of course is relying on PGI's sterling track record for bug free patches.
