Every mech, regardless of tonnage and size, has the same amount of crit slots, but your biggest "this isn't realistic" gripe is ammo in the legs? Seriously?

I can understand mounting heat sinks and electronics in the legs, but ammo? How could missle or large ballistic rounds possibly be stored then moved from the legs, which are moving themselves, without constand loading jams etc?

Why can we do it? Because the rules the game is based on allows it.

Why do heat sinks operate like they do? Shouldn't we cool off faster the hotter we are? Why does a heat sink installed somewhere in my arm or leg help as much dissipating the heat of the fusion reactor core in the center torso of my mech as a heat sink installed right below it?
Why do Double Heat Sinks take 3 crits outside the engine but fit inside the engine just as well as standard heat sinks?
Why does a Hunchback left torso has just as many crit slots as his right torso? Why does a light mech have the same number of crit slots as twice as large assault mech?

So many questions...

I'm not trying to troll anything. I know the game isn't based on reality and we're talking about giant robots, lasers, etc.

I guess my point is we should stick to some of the TT rules. Not follow them exactly, but use them as a guide. We are already doing it with the mech names, designs, stock configurations, electronic systems, weapons and even damage/heat values. The TT rules were made to balance the game and add depth to the experience. It's total science fiction but every once and a while a little dose of reality helps stretch my imagination, allows me to wrap my head around the concepts and thus adds to a deeper gaming experience.

I still think this game is great and have high hopes for the future.

We do follow TT Rules with Ammo. There is no "rule" that ammo needs to be adjacent on TT.

I have no issue with ammo in the legs, because I like to imagine the ammo jingling around in my Yen Lo Wang's legs while the cockpit speakers blare "My Spurs Go Jingle Jangle Jingle"

Many arguments could be made about how absurd it is, but the reality is that, well, reality doesn't have that much of an impact in a world where missiles can only fly about 1 km and 100-ton walking tanks exist.

That being said, it irks me that double heat sinks don't fit in the legs. The legs are simply the perfect and logical location for heatsinks from a realistic viewpoint (yeah, I know that doesn't matter), but oddly double heatsinks can't be installed there. I assume it's this way in tabletop Battletech, though I've played that very little over the years.

Ideally, one could choose between ammo in the legs or heatsinks, with the heatsinks there granting extra cooling when standing in water on or snow. That way, there would be a bit of a choice as to what to put in the legs. Right now, there's simply no other logical choice but ammo - double heatsinks wont' fit there, no modules have leg hardpoints, nor are there any leg-mounted weapons.

A scout pilot friend of mine always makes sure when he Tag's a Mech with ammo, that he Tag's them in the leg. That ways when there is an ammo explosion both legs are taken out.

What else are you going to put down there? Anyone running DHS (pretty much everyone) can't put anything else down there. It's just wasted space if you don't put ammo there. Let's not pretend that a game where we walk around in giant robots and shoot at each other on far off planets needs to be realistic and have the ammo right next to the gun shooting it.

So... what can you put in the legs?

SHS? - Useless (even with the water boost bump) vs DHS
Can't use IS DHS (only Clan DHS can)
ECM? - I guess you could, but Ravens get legged these days, but by then, you're probably toast anyways.
BAP? - trick question, you shouldn't install it unless you have ECM or are crazy enough to want it

So... why not? Unless you are a light mech, you generally won't be legged unless you skimped a lot on your leg armor.

I always thought the way they did ammo in the legs was liquid propellent and warhead. Lightweight shells with the gun and the heavy bits are pumped into it when its loaded.

The fact it comes with a considerable risk makes it pretty balanced. I fail to see the issue.
