Customizing Your Mech...

''IF'' I were to buy a mech, is it fully customizeable as the old game was? Can I change out any weapons, heat sinks, whatever as I see fit within the weight limits? I can't seem to do anything with the trial mechs, which, isn't much fun and kinda forces you into buying other mechs.... Unless there is a way to try other ones before you buy them?
Also, since MWO is in beta, would I keep the mech I buy when it is out of beta?

Also, it does take awhile to get c-bills for mechs and parts.

Doesn't take long to get your first mech, because you are getting Cadet Bonus for your first 25 matches (increased c-bill earnings), after that it slows down considerably.
You don't need both currencies to buy a mech - Hero mechs are MC-only and the rest can be bought either with c-bills or with MC.

hardpoints are listed in the mechlab as well as in the purchase menu, and you can find detailed mech hardpoint info on sites such as Smurphy. http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/
Energy weapons only go in energy hardpoints, etc

We are in a time before the clan tech is spread among the inner sphere. There are no omni-mechs that can be easily changed out with anything. The Inner Sphere mechs have a hard-point system. Ballistics go in B slots. Energy go in E slots. Missiles go in M slots.
When you go to buy a mech, you'll see a list of hardpoints on the right.
Highlighting the hardpoint (Missile for example) will pop up numbers that tell you where the hardpoints are.
Note, you do not "need" both to buy a mech. You can buy a mech with "Either" MC or Cbills . Cbills are the in game cash earned by playing. The is for rich people who don't want it now instead of grinding for the cash or people who want to support the game. Personally I use mine for hero mechs, paintjobs and mech bays.
Team 'Merika!
While cookie cutter builds are good, I recommend straying from the norms and experimenting. Some builds while very unlikely do prove to be excellent. For example the flamer / MG / AC-10 Jager. People say flamers and MGs are useless, and damage-wise they are. However the psychological effect is devastating. Flamers disorient you by hazing you down and making you unable to see. For some reason they rapidly shut down splat cats, too, which is an added bonus. Add to this the AC-10s tearing through armor, and the MG's peppering pelting sounds become a lot more than a "OMG OMG OMG" panic-inducing weapon when it starts causing internal ammo explosions. I don't recommend it for everyone, but it works great for me.
Good luck!

You could also get some premium time to help with the cbill gain. That way you could get the cbills to aquire weapons and equipment very fast. The largest sinks are heavy weapons like ppc and gauss rifles, XL engines and upgrades like endosteel and double heatsinks. The Heavy metal hero could be a good way to aquire most of these in an assault chassis right off the bat. Though you should take the xl off it and put it in a lighter mech like a cicada or a raven.
I almost never sell extra stuff apart from single heatsinks and medium lasers that I have a ton of. Switching out the loadouts between mechs is a good way to save on the high cbill items like engines.

Customization is similar to MW2 & MW3 games, but with a couple of limitations. There are 'hardpoints' where you can mount different types of weapons, and those vary from mech to mech and from one variant to another within a given chassis. Study those options and plan ahead if you can before buying a mech of your own. Also, only a few variants can mount ECM... so if you care about that make sure to select the right mech and variant.
Here is a great site that will let you play around with customizing before you purchase anything:

Remember to save money for things like dhs and better engines.
And NEEVER SELL ANYTHING. You just may find that the engine your cataphract came with is great for your raven.
Seriously. Selling stuff is almost always a mistake. Mechbays are $2 each after the first four.
And yeah, if you missed it, nothing costs both cbills and mc. If both prices are listed, you can use either. Ths confused my friends too.
