The cleaned up arm and leg are looking nice. So does the additional detail on the LRM launcher. I think the left leg's hip joint is bit too much to the front. Shifting it to the back could improve things.

Perhaps you can also allow the "backpack" to extend a bit over the shoulders towards the neck, to ake a reference on the original.

PS: Don't let the ERRATIC_CHEESE see that mecha crotch

Made a few changes, did some cleaning.

Posted Image

Extended the backpack as suggested, added mooring loops (whatever those are called -there would be a pair somewhere on the back of the mech as well -tow cables are probably back there too), Base of the cockpit/neck has been "up armoured", the hip area's still being hammered out...

I don't believe I've had the pleasure/misfortune of meeting Erratic Cheese but I admit the crotch was sticking out a bit too much. It sort of came out that way when I tried to get more slope for deflection and armour depth...

Erratic Cheese made a joke that all the mechs are nude and therefor must use clothes, or else it won't meet the requirements of a good game for kids. :)

Looks like it just came off the assembly line :D.

I'm curious how you will do the foot. Keep up the good work.

So I took a few features and crammed them together and expanded on the command post gear.
When I used the slotted eye, I was originally thinking about frog and sheep eyes but looking at it now, I can't help but think of the various Zentran pods and suits. Anyway, I ran with a glowy looking eye since using a sensor dish didn't really emphasize the Cyclops characteristic as well. The pilot's observation slot is a shutter style similar to tanks. I may expand it to beyond the single port again and maybe lengthen them.

"linework" done using a slightly leaky roller pen in a car. Not the worst situation to be drawing in but a challenge for decent lines which I tend to suck at without a stable environment and a little extra concentration. Colored via computer.

Does anyone know where the AC20 is normally placed on the Cyclops? It looks like maybe the right side torso below the twin lasers but I'm not entirely certain.

This is the one I like the most!

Just poppin in to let you folks know I'm not dead or anything. Finals should be done this week and I can resume screwing around with the design. I've got a hand full of variations that depart more from the original look to scan in and share but not until this weekend I guess.

I suppose I could do the final in 3D if there's enough interest

So here are a bunch of thumbs I during some down time. I might do a redesign but one big question in redesigning is how far should one depart from the original.

Posted Image
The one on the left reminds me of the Tetra Gerbera (Sp?) now that I look at it. The right one was kind of a musing about closer integration to the torso and bringing back the idea that the eye is a cockpit (more on that in a little bit.)

Posted Image
Kind of a nod to Zaku. I won't be using these but thought I'd share em anyway, since someone had a sort of request for something that looked kind of like one.

Posted Image
I couldn't help but have these remind me of the Geth from Mass Effect. The thing is, I was thinking about streamlining the original Cyclops head and neck. It's probably just the "eye."

Posted Image
A quick rear view doodle. I doubt the final version would pose so dynamically given the nature of Battletech mechs (big and brick-like.)

More images to come in a few...

If spoiler tags work, maybe it'll save people from a few loading issues *crosses fingers*
Side note: The images in the last couple of post was done using a digital camera because my scanner is being a pain...

Spoiler

Pretty much another Zaku-like along with another streamlining. You can see I tried to integrate the original helmet-like head.

Spoiler

Another take on the head with a bit of the top torso, the bottom one moving sensor elements towards the back. I totally ripped the mast from one of the Macross pods off. lol

Spoiler

If I'm going with a new head design, it's probably going to be this one. A little less massive and still retains a pretty distinct silhouette. It has a rail-like passive receiver that runs around the head and an armoured skirt around that to protect the head and its elements.

Spoiler

Going back to the bit about the cockpit, I was thinking about what the view might be like in there. One thing I suspect a lot of people miss is the feel of the mech from the seat. When I was trying out IL2:Sturmovik, I noted how the console in the planes tended to crowd the forward part of the view. When I got into the Do335, I was suprised at the layout and aesthetics. This also made me think about the cockpits of a lot of 5th gen aircraft and how they reduce the burden on the pilot's senses.

I remember seeing an article years ago about a study some people did about the amount of information an airline pilot had to absorb in-flight, and the number they came up with was astronomical. Anyway, when I did this arrangement I had both the Do335 and the Space Ship One cockpits in mind.

I probably should shrink the "glass" a little bit.

Posted Image

Speaking of the Space Ship One cockpit, I thought some of you guys might get a kick out of this virtual Space Ship One cockpit. You can look around from the pilot's seat:

Spoiler

Think of this as some kind of bonus pic or something. They were just fast sketches of characters that might be mechwarriors. Or something.

Really amazing work. I can't wait to see your final version.
I noticed some of your head ideas looked very similar to the Phantom Labor from Patlabor.

That my friend, is a hell of a redesign. Good job! Makes a nice, refreshing break from this Reseen/Unseen crap that has been flying around.
