More brawling than sniping at range but ER LL can do range sniping if you do not mind the heat, you just lose the ECM disabling and ER LL shoots like a laser where PPC shoots like a Ballistic.
EDIT: Never use an XL engine in an Awesome, though you get CT cored more than other Mechs, if they do punch the side torsos (it happens) XL makes your death easier than it already is. Always run Standard except maybe in 9Ms and PBs.
You've turned one of the worst Awesomes for brawling into a brawler. Ouch.
From this picture you can assess two things; my basic build concept and the number of Awesomes I have mastered on the pilot tree.
The Awesomes 9M and 8R are better for brawling. The 8V has the best chance of getting 2 to 5 kills and surviving as a ranged indirect- and direct-fire support mech (Which is actually the intended role on any mechwarrior game).
With that XL you're going to die very quickly, and with the heat you're going to shut down very often. Use the 8R for an SRM build. 4 SRM 6's equals two shot kills on Ravens. One shot kills on Commandos. I got accused of hacking with the 8R as a brawler several times, and once someone asked how I loaded "so many streaks." Best part? Still kept a standard 300 engine. Yay!
If you do get the Pretty Baby, treat it like a combination of the 8V and the 9M which is, in fact, exactly what it is. Worst thing I ever did with the Pretty Baby was turn it into a straight on brawler. Like the 8V, the default rig of the Pretty Baby is meant to have a balance of ranges.
The 8V's original composition may suck in terms of appearance, but you'd be surprised. LRMs and ER PPC for range. ER PPC and Large Laser as they get closer. Then LL and Small Laser when they get too close. The design is to prevent it from ever having the risk of overheating despite the inferior heatsinks and small count. In a pair the trial 8vs were devastating. It's why I picked them up after hating them for so long (since up until Decemeber their cockpit hit box was as big as the head, making them super easy to kill).
My build emphasizes the LRMs for range with 4 or 5 tons of ammo. The ER PPC can also provide good damage on targets I'm trying to hit. Tag makes them more accurate; honestly it does almost the same as Artemis and you have one simple fact -- Both require line of sight to work anyway. As a last resort I can combine the ER PPC with twin Medium Lasers positioned in the left chest, which always hit the exact same point on the enemy. If heat gets bad, I go to just the ML's. Worst case scenario as I'll link in a video once its uploaded, if I'm about to go down and heat is high, I'll mash override and fire until that SOB is DEAD! O_O! RAWR! Nothing more awesome than a cornered Awesome with override. Phear me!
As promised. This was actually with an 8R. My 8V would not have the overheat issue due to one ER PPC and two Medium Lasers. My 8R had twin ER PPCs and nothing else.
@Koniving thanks for the detailed post I really appreciate the information.
Edit: Is artemis + srm worth it?
Depends on your target. The comparison below is specifically referring to SRMs.
Artemis is great against heavies and assaults. Mediums that you're looking straight at. You are NOT going to do well against moving lights or mediums. Ideal if you are fighting targets slower than you. (Using them for offense). The tight grouping increases damage to specific components (body parts). It also increases the chances that you will score many misses with few hits on a moving target.
Non-Artemis is great against lights and mediums, or any target in motion trying to circle you. The spread increases your chances of scoring more hits with fewer misses on moving targets. This is even if your aim is terrible or if you have trouble leading the target. Ideal if you are fighting targets faster than you (using them for self-defense).
I basic/elited my 3 AWS with an XL300, then did the mastering with a STD300. The STD is much, much, MUCH more surviveable. I've had good luck using my 8V like this. 3SRM6 (3t), 2LL, and a PPC, with a STD300. Doesn't run too hot until they're in the 90-200meter range, and even then it's better than my others. A nice all-rounder
I mastered the 9M and I feel like that mech is more my style, firepower, speed, defense rolled into a nice boxy package. The other variants dont seem to work well for me.
