"nubs", if they actually cared for this game enough to realize their mistakes and adapt, would create a new account to pick a new starting 'Mech. Despite that being somewhat of a drastic measure, it's fast and it would work. That's why I added in the condition of "if they cared", because frankly, the adaptable players will be the only players who will play the game enough to become part of the paying fanbase for MWO.
I considered that, but honestly, why not allow people to trade in their starter mech for free?
Think about it this way: the starter mech would have to be worth exactly zero C-bills. An Atlas costs almost five times what a Commando costs. If you were able to sell your mech at some point there, obviously the Atlas would be the best choice to start with so you can get a bigger return on it. Since they undoubtedly have considered this, this means all starter mechs would / should cost the same and get you the same money as a refund.
So why not allow the starter mech to be freely traded in for another chassis weight up until you, perhaps, acquire a second mech (at which point the first mech works as 'normal', except the prices for it are still fixed).

Then I shall make it my personal goal to change their minds and show them the folly of taking an Assault Mech.

Atlas has to be supported - if it caught by itself; boom gone happen - Word of mouth will play a big role in this success of this game - most that are coming first to this game is going to be old school battletech players and mechwarrior players.....We'll get others into the game and actually help them as this community is awesome like that......

Most people are horrendously stupid, and in particular in a free to play game you cannot really expect them to have any more advanced thoughts than "oh shiny!". Putting them into assault mechs is the best you can do really. Most players will be risk averse anyway, so a slow, heavily armored mech that they can park behind a rock waiting for someome to come their way is their idea of fun. Do not try to sell complicated concepts like mobility or teamplay to the average gamer. Wrong audience.

I honestly doubt PGI would make the mistake of following WoT's example. I doubt horrible performance in an Assault will have your cbill balance drop after a match. That is the sign of creating a Tier System and using Game economics to balance it, which is a very bad idea. It would also be declaring Assault Mechs to be better.
I know the idea of repairing an assault costing an arm and a leg with a good possibility of losing money overall comes not just from WoT but also from the TT game where you could easily lose your mech and pilot but that concept doesn't fit outside of Table Top medium.
Back OT: I doubt it will be a problem with everyone picking Assault Mechs. We have no idea of the cost or grind up to get another mech past the first but I expect it to be constant progress. I also expect a short video explaining the different mech weights to the new players so those that do not want low and methodical gameplay don't pick an Atlas as their starting mech.
Besides, the mechlab will allow for zany things once they start tweaking mechs around. It's very easy to make a mech that is practically worthless on the battlefield so the curve is a bit higher than most games.

You get to try new mechs out. If you played with a free mech you liked one week, the next week when it is no longer free you might consider buying it.
So I am not worried at all about this.
P.S. League of Legends is free to play for those that don't know...

In fact, most of the polls on the forums regarding the type of mech people will choose actually shows that Assaults are in the minority, with Heavies and Mediums being the most picked class.

My time would be better spent breathing exhaust fumes or I dunno hitting myself in the head with a board.

You don't read the forums and this thread isn't up to your lofty ideals of what a good thread is, but you still felt compelled to cry for attention and tell us how much you hate the forums. The forums you don't read.

I think the game should be marketed as a sim/shooter because it is not a shooter it is just too complex to be just a shooter.
