If they do, they need to make a Ignore Comms Button, to mute people that abuse the voice system to spam audio for no reasaon at all. OTherwise I would just keep the Voice system off entirely... I voted yes though as I think PGI is smart enough to have a ignore/mute system when they do ingame voice... hopefully...

Yes, they would need to allow players to "Ignore" individual users just as they are allowed to "friend" others. Ignoring would essentially mute that player's chat and voice messages.

Voice comms are crucial in this game. Do you see teams that don't talk to each other ever winning tournaments almost never. Often scouting for the enemy I have to stop to type. A light mech that runs in straight line while spotting is a lame duck waiting to die, but sometimes I have to do it to report the 85 ton stalker in D3 lining up to flank 4 of our mechs in mowing row. Had one time where in my stalker I had 3 assaults flank us I had take time to not fire and type right flank face right now or die. Needless to say while I was doing that I took damage and they mowed down one our medium mechs. We won ,the fight but had I not told them face right would been cut down.

a good integrated VOIP feature would be helpful.
Battlefield 2 and 2142 has one: You can speak with your Squadmates, the Commander can speak to the Squad Leaders.

The bad thing was, what it was sparsely used.
IMHO was one of the reasons what it only worked in game. Teamspeak/Ventrillo/Mumble ect could be use before entering the server and even after leaving the server, that's much more convenient.

If MWO gets an in game VOIP, the channel should be generated for the group, so it will work even pre game and between games.
Players not in the group should be moved to the group and removed after game. Maybe with an option for the Group creator to keep non-friends in the group after the end of the match.

IMHO a good In Game VOIP should have this features:
  • The name of the speaker and his coordinates on the Battlegrid should been shown.
  • Right acoustic position of the speaker according to his in game position - so if he is on your left, you will hear him at the left.
  • The possibility to define the languages you speak as filter, and the possibility to block clients who speaks languages I don't understand.(Sounds a little bit xenophobe, but VOIP is a real distraction if some one talks to you in a language you don't understand)
  • At least to different test modes: a local one that replays your microphones recording, and a test mode that send it to the server and when returns it (to check the quality of the transmission so you can test different bandwith settings)

I actually liked the way Battlefield 2 voip was used. and when battlefield 2 in combination with Reality mod every body was using it... even for pugging. ofcourse battles went on for a bit longer!! but never the less.

Ingame voip is necessary. But a feature they could do to keep trolling down and add a bit of realism is that as soon as you die you are cut out of voip for the game. And then can only text chat(maybe).

That way you would have the "OMG they are" BOOM. Uh, where was he last guys..

Probably would need to leave the chat to offset teamspeak where that wouldn't happen though.

Voice is absolutely crucial and integral to a game like this. I am very surprised it isn't implemented. In the heat of battle, I don't know how many times I wanted to warn someone about something that ended up killing or maiming them, but I couldn't because I couldn't take my hands off to type.

You can teamspeak it up with your clan mates still. I play Savage 2 a lot and teamspeak with my brother (chatting about random things occasionally) while using the integrated voice for important team information. That game doesn't require nearly as much coordination as MWO and it's had voice for years and years now.

Chatting is an important part of the game as others have already said, however If they do force us to use an ingame version I would hope that they put in toggle options for starting the game with everyone but your friends that you know to be muted or everyone muted off the bat.

In game voice chat is essential.
Chromehounds
Steel Battalion( line of Contact)
Armored core 5 all have and had in game chat, these games wouldn't be half of what they are with out it.

The only thing that Armored Core5 and Verdict Day has on MWO is teamspeak. I really miss being able to call out positions and tactics, besides hearing people in the heat of battle. TeamSpeak adds a completely other level to the game especially when it comes to immersion and battle plans.

Count me in!!!

probably, yes. but the feature have to come with a easy&fast reachable MUTE BUTTON for specific players. Maybe they can integrate the mute button into the TAB table.

If In-game voice chat existed, I think you wouldn't find the gap between pugs and premades as huge a divide as it is now.

I would have voted "yes" if one of the options was "Yes, if the ECM suite also affected the LVHF/UHF voice comms spectrum". If you are using in-game VOIP and the ECM has no effect on it, ECM, as implemented, does not work the way it should. (you could argue that tactical comms in the 31st century uses lasers for mech to mech comms which could not be affected by an ECM suite.)

The problem with this is then people would just use 3rd party software

I think in game voice chat would improve the strategy in the game and especially for the players not in clan. 0

Vent/teamspeak have been around long enough that they have good products.

This is like asking GM or Ford to make their own tires for their cars? They don't because other people are better at making tires. They use the equipment that is out there.

For gaming that is vent and teamspeak (or one of the other slew of voice software products).

Why waste development time/cycles on voice, when they could be bringing so much cooler things to the table?

No it is not like that at all. No car company is going to sell a car and then say to go buy tires elsewhere because they don't make them. It is business suicide. Half the stuff in any given car is made by a third party anyway, but it is all still there. Having everything required to use the product to its full potential in the same package is paramount. This is the kind of attitude and disregard that helped lead PC gaming down a dark and potentially self-destructive path during the previous decade. I don't want to see the platform venture there again.

For success one always needs to expand beyond the core. In PC gaming that won't happen with asking the masses to download, install, configure and operate multiple programs to achieve the full potential of a single product. And if you or another are not willing to do that, someone else will and take that business potential from you.

Yeah, were is in-game comms, why can't I hear anyone ever.
There is an option with a check for VOIP but it never seems to work.

Thing is they tried to have a semi integrated chat using the C3 cleint, but that was.. well it will be working Soon ™

What I would like to know is has anoyone tried this from their partner/sometime sponsor Razor. Logically as Razor has already stepped up and helped PGI out at the "Launch" event and stuff they should promote their Voice app - they did with their excellent Surround sound software why not this?

It blows my mind that there is still no ingame VOIP solution.

Or lobby/region chat.

Warframe and many other F2P games have this sorted and done. So why not MWO?

I would use it. But I'm not looking forward to having the whingers in my ears. Maybe only lance and company commanders can talk?
