Mechs that need to torso twist between shots to be effective: Centurions, Dragons, and Awesomes.

Recommended mechs for people who hate or don't know how to torso twist to shield or disperse damage: Cataphracts, Catapults, and Stalkers.

The Wang just needs to lose 1 ballistic slot, and instead get another energy, and 2 missile slots, and it would be great.

Sounds like the OP has never been in a YLW running around at 107KPH. A mech going that ******** fast with an AC20 and two medium lasers can do some straight up ninja **** and cause a whole lot of pain. I basically run it like a miniature Dragon.

In the novels they actually add some lasers I thought to the left arm, I think if they added 2 energy hardpoints on the left arm it would make the Wang a much more interesting variant than it currently is.

The thing is right now the only reason to get one is for having an AC20 in the arm going 100kph. There's really nothing else worth putting there.

even the Wang is better than the deaths knell. That is the most useless mech ever. cant pack anything really hard hitting, cant mount electronics. Nothing special about it at all. This is the only hero mech I have ever bought and I got so pissed trying to play it I just sold it because I wanted to punch the screen every time I saw that sorry *** mech taking up a hangar spot.

So far I have not seen a hero mech that is much better than the regular ones. a littel c-bill boost is kinda meh. Better just to play a few matches more to get more c-bills.

The Yen could use a buff, I agree. It's the first Hero, and is outplayed by other Centurion variants. It was awesome when it was the fastest one, but ultimately would have been P2W if it remained the fastest. But it definitely has dropped out of usability lately.

2 more energy on the arm would bring to a top tier 'mech. I'd argue even 1 energy on the arm could make a difference, to run arm-mounted Gauss/PPC models.

That said I'm also hugely in favor of adding ECM to the Death's Knell. Given it's 10 tons lighter than the other ECM 'mechs I sure wouldn't call P2W on that. It needs it.

TOGSolid,

What a cool idea. I never considered one that fast. Maybe there is viability after all, just in a much different way than people are used to playing Cents. It sounds almost like a heavy cicada at that point. Cool!

That said, a CN9D is far better at the role (with a Gauss).

Get a Cent D if you want to play a fast Cent. They're good, very good: Top tier fast 'mechs. The YLW was largely outdated by the D.

I've seen people take out 4+ enemies fighting as last player on a team in the Wang. Properly handled, the thing is brutal.

a fast moving ac20? what's wrong with that? Played right the wang is a considerable threat.

Here's the subjective part, though. Fact is, anyone who can play a YLW 'right' can do a better job with a better mech, like a hunchback, that trebuchet with the ballistic slots, or, the other centurion variants. The YLW is a pretty badly-designed mech. It has less hardpoints than others of the same variant, and has 2 ballistic points in the arm, where an AC/20 is typically mounted. One guy mentioned putting a gauss on the YLW, but, you know who else can mount a gauss in a relatively fast mech? 2 out of the other 3 cent variants. I'm all about preventing Pay 2 Win, but, at the same time, PGI would do well to make sure people get their money's worth.

I suppose. I just have a really big hard on for AC20s tbh and the YLW is the only Cent that can run one. The YLW is hardly a bad mech, it just kinda comes down to your playstyle I think.

Oh, I've got one and it's even camo'd up to look like Sonic The Hedgehog because gottagofast.jpg. I <3 all the Centurions equally for different reasons. :P

I wouldn't mind if they buffed my Yen-lo, but it's not totally bad.
To be honest, I'm a horrible player but I've gotten as many as 3 kills and 500 damage in a pug match. If I can do that then the Wang has got to have something going for it. A good player should be able to do much better.

The D: cannot mount a ac20, gauss with an XL isnt a great combo, has 30° less torso twist, has convergence issues in fast combat due to the arm mounted ballistic. A, AL, 4P and 4SP are all way better "slow" meds and 7M or 3C are way better fast "meds".

With the current missile dmg (SRM) id take a wang over any other med. The JJ Trebs are good to (esp. the 7M) if you want that extra agility or abuse the broken streaks :P

Hero mechs should be worse than their free variants. The idea is that they're money grinders, -not- competitive mechs.

If they make any of the hero mechs "good", you end up toeing the line of pay to win.

I don't really disagree with this, and indeed when YLW was added I figured heroes would all be sort of gimpy like this. But for better or worse all of the later hero mechs were a lot better and more versatile, ranging from comparable to non-heroes like TDK to really uber like Flame/Ilya. And then there's the ones like HM and X5 that don't even have a stock mech to compare to. I don't entirely regret buying my wang since I did indeed know what I was getting but I can definitely understand many people having buyers' remorse because nobody knew at the time how heroes would be done in the future.

The YLW is limited in the sense that it has one purpose, but it excels in that role like few others. Play it some more, and once its playstyle "clicks" for you, you will find it is capable of racking up pretty ridiculous rewards.

The Energy slots are in the CT because they are not meant to be the primary focus of the build. They also zombie really well being located there as opposed to a side torso location.

One of the prices you pay for being first, and I'm not talking about the people who purchased it I'm talking about the mech itself. It was designed at the very beginning when the devs were still on the very cautious end of not wanting P2W. At the time it was the fastest available 50 ton mech so they wanted some way to mitigate that advantage and did it through hardpoints. The question now becomes is it lackluster enough to open up the can of worms that comes with improving previously purchased mechs? I don't have one or any of the hero mechs so I don't know myself.

Yen Lo Wang is missing it's hatchet is the biggest problem. The only way to make up for the potential damage loss is to allow 1 SRM6 on the chassis... but even then, it wouldn't be quite right.

YLW, for as much as I love the look and over-all feel of the mech, is broken because it's missing one of it's key features.

I'm not responding to your comment, I'm just giving you a compliment on your signature. :P Nice.

The YLW, under the control of a decent player, is a pain in the posterior. It's the only Hero mech I'd purchase if I was a mind to. Love me some medium mechs (45 ton Scat, 55 ton Ryoken and Black Lanner, hell yea!)
