I prefer a very simple loadout which has proven very effective for me.

The key I find is not to go all-out alpha striking every piece of metal you see. I set the large lasers up for strict chain firing only and with the skills maxed, it has tremendous heat efficiency. What this means is you get a decent length of large laser to lay down followed by a chance to adjust your ballistics aim to fire off a gauss round.
I've just come out of a match with this:
My first kill was a fresh 1 on 1 with the Atlas RS and I came out of it extremely well. This is part down to being confident and staying the course in a frontal confrontation. I'm the one in control, laying down an almost constant stream of firepower while they're torso twisting to try and avoid it. Whenever they twist back to face me and fire back, off goes the gauss. Generally it's advised to stay more on the flanks with the XL engine and avoid those direct confrontations but if it comes down to it, stay your ground and hold your confidence and aim on the same spot, you will win.
Of course the damage output is lower than other builds because this is made for direct fire with less collateral damage. It's all about simply getting the job done with a minimum of fuss.
The only time I miss jump jets is on canyon network but otherwise I just think they're way too expensive on weight to justify having them. The XL engine can also have its drawbacks, especially if the gauss rifle explodes across the RT, however considering the sacrifices I'd have to make with the continuous DPS it's a trade-off I'm happy to make.
Current stats are kill/death ratio 2.02, avg dmg per match 367. The only mech I have a higher k/d with is my Spider 5K.
Heh.
