Loot.

1. Leveling through XP.
2. Loot.
MWO is missing the second.
When I started playing I was hoping that you would be able to acquire better gear by achieving certain milestones (1,000 kills/assists, 500 spot assists, K/D of 2,3 - etc).
And I was really hoping for a hardcore mode where if you died on the field, AND your team lost the battle, whoever killed you got all non destroyed gear from your mech.
This would also open up another interesting area of online games (for me at least) - an auction house, or "black-market", where this booty could be traded.
I wonder if it's too late to consider any of this...

Having better gear via playing longer is semi in place, the longer you play the more CBills you have, and the more expencive your build can be. It just reaches the point where you can have any single mech fitted exactly as you want fairly quickly, and there isn't any in-match benefit for having multiple mechs yet (with dropship having 4 will yield benefits).
There's a reason for this:
In online PvP games it's essential that new players don't start too far behind experienced players.
This is why for some games the online multiplayer dies. The new players need a large amount of time invested to become competitive with the experienced players via gear and irrespective of skill, this makes it harder for new people to enter the game, and eventually kills the multiplayer due to lack of players.
Your hardcore mode has a different issue: it gives an advantage to those that have previously won which makes it easier for them to win again. This is one of the biggest issues people had with the repair+rearm system, some people could run expensive mechs all the time because they won all the time, and they won all the time because they ran expensive mechs all the time.
TL/DR: This is an online PvP game, not an MMO.

That's why you group people up with similar ELOs. Then new players play new players, vets play vets. Not the current system that try's to average teams ELOs to a similar level with a mis-match of newbs and elites.
That just creates frustration for everyone.

The current system only uses averages when it's matchmaking a premade group.
For individual players it has a Elo target number for the match, and then populates the game with people who are closest to that target number.
The devs have stated this multiple times.
They are debating lowering the Elo rank of new players so they start further down and aren't facing average veterans.

It has always been possible to buy mechs and gain parts from a supply chain; however running field repairs have been underpinned / profitted from *extra* parts being taken as salvage - loot.

I have a very serious question.
Are you a gold farmer from a country known to have a high number of these players?

Those games were primarily single player, where that mechanic works well. Here you get c-bills, and you buy what you want.

Nope, that is patently ridiculous
Light mechs should be able to fuse with assaults. For instance, 2 commandos could fuse with a stalker to give it arms, that it could then use to box, british style.
A raven could fuse with an atlas to give it a badass bird shaped helmet. An awesome could fuse with 4 jenners that could carry it along like a litter and an important noble.
