Loving the look of this game so far, and it seems like a good deal, even without beta access.... So, I am planning on buying it for sure.

I've waited more than a decade for a MW game. This is one of the few times I will gladly and willingly give my money away.

For my part, all I can say is that the last Game I paid for was SW:TOR last December. I bought the CE because I had faith in the game. Thats 200$ worth of "I have Faith in this Game"

Yeah, I got burned by that too and I wasn't even doing it for early access as I got it two days before the end of 2011.

I have faith that this title will do a fine job and if I could blow so much for a CE for SWTOR, I can certainly dish out $60 for the revival of my old favorite franchises.

So...

Open beta is a server stress test and is basically used as a demo. It lets the developer get a lot of people in to give them a taste of the game.

Riiiight... you do realize this is going to be a free to play game, yes?

I still don't know, because I still don't know what they are doing for non-US players.

If I can transfer it to EU servers (if they happen), or if an EU package is released, I will GLADLY drop the full amount for the elite package, and probably more on top.

But time is getting a bit shorter now, and no word. 2 weeks until Inception is open to purchase, and STILL no word for us non-US players.
Pretty poor so far tbh, I am disappointed. it seems likely that the rest of the world might be second class consumers again. I hope i'm wrong!

No, no, see, I know a venture capitalist. He lives in a huge place in Cambridge (Mass) and drives a Bentley. And there have been times when he's thrown the dice, and he's lost, and lost big. If you're a venture capitalist, thats just part of the business - and there have been times when this fellow was dead broke. I, however, am neither a venture capitalist, or rich - just as I cannot afford to throw money at a casino and risk it, or the stock market, or a startup, I cannot afford to throw money at a game which, as far as I know, is vaporware. I dont gamble - cant gamble. And I've been playing computer games since Pong. What I've learned is that you put your trust in reputations - you want me to drop a pre-order on HL3? Done. The HL series has consistently shown inovation, attention to detail, quality, excellent writing, great voice actors - so yes, HL3 sight unseen. And because its Valve - who have also given us the Portal and CS series. When CS:GO was announced, it went on my wishlist - but heres the thing about beta - when I got the key for the beta and took a look at what they'd done to my belov'ed CounterStrike, it went from want to must have. Just the new modes alone would make it worth my while, and while its clearly a beta (eg: 'Hint text goes here' in the startup screen), its clear that all it needs is a bit of polish, and it'll be incredible.

I'm not going to spend a dime until I have proof this game is as much fun as MW mercs - or even the original MW. For all I know, this could be a Civ or it could be a Civ:Call to Power - one is aCiv, the other is not. So, they've called it Mechwarrior: Online, and they've got mechs you know from Battletech - but that doesnt make it Battletech - this game has no reputation for me to stake money on. This company? Never heard of 'em. They could turn out to be as fluffy and cuddly as Wargaming.net - where everything is on a need to know basis, and not a single one of you need to know. It could be as Nerf happy as WG, it could be 'lets completely alter every vehicle in the game each patch!' as WG. And I like World of Tanks. Still havent spent a dime on them, because I dont trust them.

Valve I trust - gonna buy CS:GO. Gonna get me the Civ V expansion - havent seen this good a Civ since the first one - played it, liked it, gonna bet the expansion is worth the money. Never played a Pirannah game - all I have is their entry in Wikipedia to go on, and even my 9 year old knows not to trust that.

Going to buy it either way, Its a good way to support Piranah for sticking with making us a new Mechwarrior game. I've been watching them for what? 6+ years as they fought with HG over rights and they never quit. Sure it was originally going to be a PC/Console game, but its still Mechwarrior, sure I'll have to play it online, but as it looks to be by far the best Mechwarrior yet I think I can live with that.

The problem with Free-to-play games is that unlike a normal sales where you recoup all your costs in the first three months or so of sales (hopefully), you are much more likely to have a long trickle of income. If someone like me might end up spending 60 dollars over the next four years playing their game, it is in their interest to convince me to give them all of that money up front.

The company is probably in debt at this point, and either needs to pay off loans or show returns to investors. This is the best way they can do that. Completely normal business decision.

Pretty much what I was going to write. The F2P model means they need a way to get their money back in a determinable timeframe to appease their investors.

Just an FYI: Wargaming (World of Tanks developer) brings in around 20 million a month worldwide. There is no way that is the full extent of the F2P market. Sony seems to agree because they're making Planetside 2 F2P as well. Oh and CCP, makers of EVE Online, are making Dust 514 for the PS3 F2P as well.

F2P until this game proves its not all talk. Friends of mine - dedicated Battletech players - all expressed severe reservations about a company thats charging for access to a beta - its as if they're hedging their bets against financial catastrophy, just in case this game tanks. That thought has made me very gunshy about spending any money for this game. -Don

They are not charging for beta. People are in the beta now without paying a dime. As most big PC games do now, when you pre-order they usually let you into an open beta of sorts as a perk for pre-ordering. Out of all the reservations about the game you could have I would not think "charging for beta" should be one of them.

I know you get to read some crazy stuff on forums alot but this thread is right up there.

One guy is overflowing with unbridled fury and indignation about a pretty fun lead up to a very cool peripheral announcement.

Same guy is also in the camp that thinks that a pre-order bonus should be available to those who dont pre-order and that failure to make it so constitutes such a betrayal that people should be very careful about not spending their money on a free to play game.

Then theres the charging for beta access thing. Pretty much every online game I can think of for as long as I can remember does exactly this. You pre-order you get to play earlier than the people who dont.

There is no foundation for any of this madness. If you want to get the bonus items associated with pre-ordering then do it. If you are concerned about spending a little money then dont. Thats the beauty of F2P you never have to spend a cent if you dont want to.

I've been waiting for this game for who knows how many years. I'm willing to support a franchise I love whether I'm in the beta or not.

Ian, we asked for a stick. I asked for a stick. Tons of people had polls and asked for a stick. They aren't "Pushing" jack, they're giving us what we want.

Okay I know I don't post hardly at all but this I need some clarification on this.

Because to me if I am reading this correctly it comes across as people asked to punish those who would not blindly give PGI 60 dollars without first trying the game first. I obviously must be reading that wrong so please help me because I just cannot beleive a large enough segment of the forum going comunity would be so stupid and short sighted as ask for something like that.

Now people wanting exclusivity, that I understand, and as long as the founders pack is only available a short time after everyone gets access I can get behind it. But from what I am understanding here ( and god I hope I am wrong) was that people didn't want anyone who doesn't pay 60 upfront without access to what they are getting for it as sort of a badge of honor should be screwed over?

I also would like some clarification on what you are talking about. What has your post got to do with the Artemis joystick? Anything at all or did you misquote someone?

Then theres the whole problem of understanding your post. I think what you are saying is what i mentioned just before in my post. That you want people to be able to pre-order ...um ...after the game comes out? Is that pretty much it? You can't see how odd that is?

Also I guess pre-order isnt quite the right term. Pre-commit maybe? Pre-pay perhaps. Either way you get some things for paying up early. Why on earth would you get those same things if you dont pay up until after the game is released?
