About the art of MWT:

Hunchback, Atlas, and Jenner: Not only hideous but with the most weird weapon loadout.

Awesome: not ugly but with wrong weapons.

Dragon, Stalker, Catapult, Spider, Orion and Trebuchet: Cool designs closer to the originals. Good job!

It's like the first 4 mechs where sketched by a guy who didn't even read the weapons that mechs mount.

My feeling is that MWT is a way to try and open things up to a newer generation, a little like what Wizkids tried to do with the heroclix system. Look how they changed the art style for that. Sure, for the older and original fans some of the mechs, mostly the hunchback look pretty farout there. But to a new generation of fans it might seem cool. Some of the designs are pretty nice. The Spider is cool IMHO.

MWO art style is much more industrial, and closer to Classic Battletech, with a sheen of 2012. MWT is more Saturday morning cartoon. Anyway, I hope both games are successful, because it's generally good for Battletech as a whole!

They are making a bet with all this redesign but history is here to prove that when you turn your back to the old fan base, lets say... success will be harder.
