I really can't figure out if any of the Awesomes are worth playing. I never fear them on the battlefield and that usually seems justified. However, I like Assault mechs better than the lighter ones; and I have Mastered 3 Atlases and 3 Stalkers, and banked enough XP for the Heavy Metal.

Are they all gimp? Better than I realize? Which ones should I buy? No sense in getting one Awesome if you're not going to get three, I figure.

Pretty Baby is fun. I can't speak for the others. I don't own them and have only piloted them as trials, which sucked.

8Q is a great LLas or PPC boat.
8T is pretty good with 4 LLas and 2 SRM6. Or was, before the missile nerf.
9M is fast, but has limited build options.

I would take neither of them in a 8 vs. 8 though.

9M and 8Q are my favourites, they can have incredible laser pinpoint alphas with great heat efficiency. I have about 100k xp accumulated in both of them. 9M is probably better than 8Q because XL doesn't really affect survivability(big CT always soaks up the damage).

Personally I don't like the missile variants, there are better LRM and SRM boats out there.

I'd say all of them are usable. Torso twist on AWS is simply great for assault classes. Once real weight limiting/matching is in I expect them to shine.

8Q is an energy boat with decent mobilty and torso twist. Lots of builds available.

8R/V/T all fill similar roles. I've opted for the 8R just to run a pure missile boat (2xALRM15, 2xASRM6, 2xML). T can still hold SRMs/LRMs, but is more energy focused. The 8V is imho the worst of the variants.

9M can be built for speed (86kph, fast for an assault), as can PB. 9M can also be built as quite an evil zombie with a standard engine, sacrifices some speed for that though.

I'm not a big fan of the PB myself, don't even own one. But it can be a really nasty SRM/LL combo mech. 400 engine cap makes it fast as hell also.

Yeah 9m, max speed. Either with PPC's so you get a sniper that can relocate very fast or with 4 LPulse for close action. Support other assaults and don't spearhead attacks.

The other Awesomes are useless. Get a Stalker.

i am not all that great of a player, so what i say next could mean nothing, but here it goes.
Currently I have a .97 KD ratio on my 8Q with 6xLL or 4xppc. (On 45 drops.)
Currently I have a .84 KD ratio on my 8T with 2Xlrm20+art and 2XLL. (on 32 drops post missile nerf only)
I have not decided what my third will be.
My problem is the awesome as a whole is that every time I am in mine they feel like they would be done better by a different mech. I have spent most of my time in this game in hunchbacks and catapults, so I may be a bit bias.

The 9M is the best of the bunch, but I'd wait the next week to go with the Highlanders.. Awesomes are for a niche of players, they can do good in the right hands but generally their very big shape is a severe weakness.

Yes that is the problem together with the hitbox and is why the 9m is different from the rest. It can do something most other assaults cannot.

As a pubbie I am of average quality (I would like to think that I am somewhat above that but probably is not) and my 9m stats after they started to track it is this:

Posted Image

Its easy to drive compared to the rest of the obsolete Awesomes. If you are going to be in a slow mech, why not take a Stalker?

Edit; forgot the main point about the stats :-p My win % in the awesome is higher than my total. So there is something about the 9m and I think its all about the mobility.

The Q: ERPPC in the arm and (4) Lg Lasers in the torsos I find to be a really nice build.
The R: (2) Lg lasers (one in each arm), and (4) srm6s in the torsos is decent.
You can get both of these up to a speed of about 65.

I really like piloting an Awesome. It certainly does tend to get cored easily, but I enjoy the challenge.

They're great support mechs to pair with another assault. Stick with and just behind another assault on your team and whenever that assault draws attention from an enemy and they start exchanging fire, swing in and help out. I have Mastered all six of them and even module unlocked 4 of the 6.

If compare with other assaults The main difference for awesome is his side torsos hit boxes which are not easy to hit. This means you can go for XL engine and use all speed potential of 9m model which would not be the case for stalker or atlas for example.
Combine 9m mobility with LP lasers high DPs and you may get a solid config which will have a role even in 8 vs 8 games

8q is the one i use. I like the heavy energy weapon loadout. They do seem a little squishy for an assault mech though.

The 9M is fantastic. You need a big XL and either 3xPPCs or 4xLLAS. Personally, I run an XL385, 3xPPCs and 21 DHS, (or 20 with 3xSLAS tossed in when I want to see red lights).

The 8Q is also good. Slower, but it can boat lasers like none other. 4xLLAS and 3xMLAS works great. So do PPCs. I've recently enjoyed a "ghetto Black Knight" build with an ERPPC, 2 LLAS, 4 MLAS. Not optimized, but strangely fun.

I have the PB but can't recommend it. Very difficult to work with in the current meta. Missiles are so underpowered right now half the hard points are wasted. That said, I did try a new build today and combined with turning on arm lock for the PB (I don't use it on any other mech) I actually had good success.

The 8R is a fine SRM brawler. But you might want to wait until missiles are re-adjusted before trying it. Right now it's snipe or be sniped out there.

The heck you talking about brother? The Awesome's side torsos are MASSIVE and easily destroyed. You run an XL in a 9M or PB because you can mount absurd 385s and 400s and rip along at nearly 90kph. You don't do that in any other Awesome, it's not worth it.

I am going to buy more Highlanders when they come out; but they aren't yet and I might as well play something new while I wait.

Which 4? I am trying to narrow it down to the three I want.

Lots of good ideas above. I really like them, but they are harder work than an Atlas or Stalker.

Ironically, the PB is probably the worst of the Awesomes. It just has too few hardpoints. It can move fast with a big engine, but there's not much point if all you do is bring the same firepower as a Hunchback.

My favourite three:

8Q with 4LL and 3ML
9M with 3LL and 3SSRM2
8T with 2LL and 2LRM20+Artemis
