So this question came from a discussion with llwrath in a different thread.

Please answer the above Survey with your personal preference foremost in your mind. Consider your 'favorite' or 'most fun to run' mech when answering. I realize that there are other considerations, however this is assuming all things are equal and the mech you want to run is the mech you should. This is in part why the poll answers are hidden so you don't have to disclose anything publicly but can still provide the data.

I’ll keep it simple, this is purely a demographic survey regarding speed preferences to satisfy brief intellectual curiosity.
  • Question 1: What at speed, all things being equal, do you prefer your mech to move? This is regardless of mech class, just how fast do you prefer to move?
  • Question 2: Brief self-report on personality type.
  • Question 3-6: Mech class considered, do you max out your engine speed. In these questions I am asking whether engine size and therefore speed is a priority before/after/or in conjunction with the rest of the loadout.
  • Question 7: Do you avoid certain mechs because of how fast they move with an effective build? (too slow, too fast)
Please discuss

Edit: Added "Speed is of no concern to me when purchasing a mech." to last question. Thanks Alex i should have included that.

Edit 2: A clarification to address a trend in responses

Edit 3: further clarification for questions 3-6

The answer is relative to what chassis I am piloting and what role my team expects of me.

I understand that is the practical answer, but this is purely about preference. What, if the stars aligned for you, would you pick purely based on your desire and enjoyment.

the last option was crap for me sorry... but i don´t buy a mech when the loadout in general doesn´t fit me...nothing to do with the engine...

i live by the credo "speed isn´t everything, but it sure helps..."

This is serious business and it needs a poll.

Tone the polls back. I feel like I'm taking a marketing survey.

I see what he's doing here.

(And incidentally, I'll be curious to see the same poll about 3 weeks after collisions are reimplemented.)

It is extremely hard for me to answer any of these questions.

I really build my mechs to stay close to it's original design while making it worth playing in terms of DHS and ammo in the MWO environment.

Take the CN9-D, LBX/10, LRM/10, and 2 Medium Lasers.

I modified it to move a bit slower and added Endo-Steel to include more ammo, Artemis on the LRM, and both Medium Lasers upgraded to Medium Pulse Lasers, then the rest as DHS.

Seriously though.
Good poll. I see what you're getting at, and your questions aren't tainting the results.

I want a mech that goes maximum speed while boating ER PPCs in every slot and has all the double heat sinks ever made stuffed into the massive engine and every spare slot. (edit: I'm also joking - a game where everyone does this would be dull).

I wasn't able to answer this poll. My answers would be different for every mech I have. And in a world where I get every wish... see above.

My COM-2D marries a mix of engine speed, armour to last long enough to let the SSRMs do the job vs other light mechs (won't help with them double AC/20 shots, but it is good for lasting through lots of laser fire over the duration of the game), and the weapons themselves. Engine speed choice was neither my first priority nor my last priority. None of the light mech poll options allowed for my choice of "I considered engine speed with the same priority as all of the other systems and tried to find a happy medium amoung them all".

My COM-1B on the other hand I knew I would want to have a lot of speed in because I have fewer outright weapons than a jenner and no ECM or other things that might help me avoid being noticed and struck. Engine size was a pretty high priority.

And lastly in the COM-3A, which I play with stock weapons, engine choice was the last thing on the list because I don't need to go too much faster than stock to stay with the safety of the herd and punch things in the backside with SRMs.

For for first two poll questions, speed is never a factor when I buy a new mech, and I pilot mechs in every weight class, but that doesn't mean I won't deliberately go for a huge engine first on certain specific mechs. I'm happy going 150 in a light and I'm happy going 50 in an assault. edit: I'm also happy going 100 in a light or 70 in an assault - it really is a per-mech, per-role, very specific thing.

I dont but voted anyway. Light mechs with XL will be the obvious trend.

I get what you are saying. I have a stable of 18 mechs encompassing all 4 weight classes and every battlefield role, that said though I do have one or two mechs that I am happy... perhaps too happy, maybe even giddy to drive.

Those happen to be drag racers with legs and lasers. Not everyone is going to make speed a primary factor in their "favorite mech" but I would put money on the table that if you looked at the mech that is your favorite all things being equal (and I'd also bet that everyone has one if they think about it) you would find it says somethign about the speed you like to move in game.

And that's all i'm getting at right now, at the core of your gameplay experience considering only speed (everything else is equal) what do you prefer given your druthers.

Some of these questions need multiple choice checkboxes instead of radio buttons. I am not a single issue voter.

There are complex combinations of reasons why I build how I build or skip variants I skip.

Sometimes it's because there's not enough speed, other times because there's not enough firepower, and yet other times where it gives an appearance of potential but fails to perform well in testing.

There is also a significant amount of contextual impact on the answers for questions 1 & 2. For example, on Tourmaline I want a faster mech because the map is larger and impatience plays a role. On River City, I don't care much about speed, because the front line is within walking distance of the base so even an Assault mech can generally make it back in time to prevent a cap, as it should be.

Your survey is well intentioned but falls short of considering some of the main factors that really paint the picture on the answers given or even enable people to supply an accurate answer.
