As has been said, they should care because, even though they "might not care about retaining/attracting new players", those new players are showing up anyway. (Well, some are).
And those players don't give a flying frak what "development stage" the company and/or the rabid fanboys/defense force say the game is at.
They log in and play. Or try to. And they make their decision to stay, go away forever or leave for a bit and comeback later from their first impressions of the game.
If those impressions are a catastrophic failure, well, that's not good.
They then take those impressions and share them with their friends, who share them with their friends etc . . .
So, in my opinion, PGI should care very much about retaining/attracting new players.
