Because it is run like an MMO. Sure, it's not massive, but unlike every online shooter (or any other mechwarrior game) since Doom, you cannot host your own server, play offline, make your own maps, mechs, or mods, and you have no control over which content you have access to, as it is tied to an account that PGI controls.

This is a complete lie. You start in starter systems... which have typically a steady 20-30 people in them... I guess in 10 hours you couldn't figure out how to warp to a gate/station. Which means your intelligence level is questionable.
You don't have to doubt me. I am not lying. I was out sick two days from work and so played during the day when no one was around. I know EVE has a world wide following but I saw 1 new player during my time there playing in the middle of the work week during the day.

Excellent point. I chose freelancer (AFAIK the first GRAPHICAL computer game to be called an MMO) because, to be honest, I seriously doubted anyone but myself and a handful of others even knowin what MUDs are or believing tey ever existed. Cripes, half the people here probably have to google Freelancer *raises beer stein*
*Edit* Thanks for reminding me how old I am. Remind me to core you when I get the chance.

I miss MUDs, MUSHes, and MUX.
Freelance was also a lot of fun when playing with friends. Otherwise you could literally go weeks without seeing another player.

We've had "pubs" forever... meaning a random solo noob in a public server. to go "pubbing" is to take a competitive team and join random public servers and "pwn".
That's what 2 4-mans synch dropping thought about the pub/pug team I was in once. They were quickly wiped out 8-1. Random solos are not noobs as they so painfully found out.
