I read and listen to all the Dev posts and NGNG pod casts. One of the twitch events with Russ recently he mentioned that they have been trying to negotiate with them to have the unseen in MWO so I speculate the non answer we have been given is in lue of more negotiations. It's something that makes sense and fits the facts.

Some of y'all think that Harmony Gold has a proper and legal license to the art will be surprised to find out that they don't and never had the proper and legal license for the art to the Unseen. Studio Nue, the original animators, own the copyrights and the contract between Tatsunoko and HG is null and void since Tatsunoka does NOT own the copyrights to the mech/character designs from SDF: Macross. It took a 2006 Japanese Supreme Court decision to set the record straight on who owns what between Studio Nue and Tatsunoko. Tatsunoko owns the copyrights to the show SLDF: Macross and Studio Nue owns the copyrights to the mech/character designs that appeared in SLDF: Macross. If PGI wanted to use the original Unseen they would have to license them from Studio Nue and bypass Harmony Gold altogether.

The sad part is, Harmony Gold doesn't actually have real rights to the Mech Designs. Since the license they had with the Japanese company was proven invalid...Due to the fact that the Company that licensed them, didn't actually own the rights to them either. The person that actually owns the rights, was the one that originally licensed them to FASA. Which is where the whole unseen reseen mess comes in.

Just to say one more piece on the subject: I'm big into BT art, and fancy myself a bit of an amateur sketch artist ( just started dabbling in the digital stuff, check my link if anyone cares, but I digress ) and I really like all of FD/ Mr. Iglesias' BT and MW artwork. The only real reason I hold out any sort of hope for the unseen, is that FD makes really good art, and all the original TRO designs they've run through him have pretty much turned out gold. Even the ugliest of the ugly, the Stalker, came out looking new and utterly improved. My one last glimmer of hope is that they've been having him draw up some pretty new and improved designs separating from the original Unseen, and are in talks about whether or not the designs can legally be used. Or something. I don't know how legal cluster-f*cks like the ones HG got into with FASA work.

It would be a shame that redesigned unseen mechs would not make it in the game. They are the most iconic mechs in the Battletech universe. It would not be a real Mechwarrior game without them.

As I said before, I just wish Catalyst Games and Topps would just retcon out the unseens/reseens entirely. Replace the Rifleman with the Jagermech anytime it appears in the fiction, Longbow with the Catapult, ect ect.

This would end the matter and separate BattleTech and MechWarrior from the debacle once and for all.

Seriously, I can't see how unseen could be iconic battletech designs when they weren't created by FASA in the first place.

No, it won't settle it. It will only **** off and fracture the fan base between those that like the originals and those that didn't. Most of the original players of BT got into the game because of those mechs. The thing that will solve the problems will be for Harmony Gold to man up and admit they never held the license to those images to begin with and pay restitution for their illegal actions. Either that or get the feds involved and charge them under the RICO statues.

The only way i see them avoiding issues is by taking unseen/reseen, redesigning them, and calling them something new and giving slightly changed variants.

Exp:
Marauder would be renamed Dagger, Have the main weapon move to a different torso (mid to side?), change its 2ndary weapons around, and make the Main variant of the Dagger one of the Sub-variants of the Marauder.
Then change the overall shape dramatically (like the Stalkers and Jagermech, but dont undo the legs). Somethign cool might by to replace the arms with more turret like appendages that can still aim left and right.

Tho in many ways it is still the same mech, there are too many differences to call it the same mech. It would be like calling Urban mechs R2-D2, or apple pie a peach cobbler.

Why would it **** them off? They lost them over 15 years ago. They are Crusher Joe and Macross designs, NOT BattleTech. It doesn't matter even if Harmony Gold released them or not. FASA, WIzkids, nor Catalyst Games created them. They belong to the franchises they started with.

Yeah ppl hate the designs but youd have to redo them for this game anyways and you might as well give up on the original ones anyways, theyre gone.

Wish I could find that one scene in Aliens where dude is screaming at Vasquez that the other guys was gone on youtube

First off, the designs are still legal under tournament rules. If by that standard then anything not produced by FASA themselves is excluded which is pretty much every mech from the TRO 3025, TRO 2750, TRO 3050, etc... ie all early designs since they all came from different anime series. Harmony Gold does NOT own the designs and never did. Studio Nue owns the designs and the license FASA had with Studio Nue before HG got the license from Tatsunoko is valid unlike the one HG has.
