From an Role Play standpoint, one of the things that's said in about all tech readouts about the Marauder is it's distinctive silhouette. Nothing on the battlefield looks like a Marauder.. Well.. Pre clans that is. It had an alien look to it. most other mechs were humanoide in appearance.

The Marauder is a icon from anime, its a officer mech for a Zentran warrior frim Macross. Back in the day it was leased to FASA by Harmony Gold who used it as Khyron's combat mecha in Robotech, but FASA lost the contract to use the image (as well as a few other mechs like the LAM designs) when Harmony Gold refued to renew the contract.

Get your information correct. FASA stole nothing. They had licenses. The problem came from two different Japanese companies giving rights to two different US companies. They agreed never to use the art work again because they never wanted to deal with it again.

Yeah it was something like Japanese company A sold the exclusive rights to 'Super Dimensional Fortress Macross' to Harmony Gold but a second company in Japan gave FASA the rights to some of the Mecha not knowing that HG already owned the U.S rights to everything. Or something like that

First time I saw the marauder was in robotech and I instantly loved it ! Then later, as I was reading through some technical readouts of BT, I saw it and I was like "Man, this looks awesome, but mostly familiar as hell !". When I connected the dots tegether, I was amazed and it is still my favorite mech, and I also like its weapons, not the AC too much but I can deal with it.

Closer. Harmony Gold owns exclusive rights to distribute the original three Anime that became Robotech. Its quite likely if FASA had wanted to spend the money they could have kept rights to those designs because that is not covered in HG's licenses. However they were happy with ending the case with as little legal cost as possible. HG constantly tries to use its license for more than it really grants.

The best utilization of the marauder in my opinion was in the mech warrior 2 series. It was defenitely a good long range heavy hitter. With the ability to customize the weapon systems you could easily link 3 er ppc and a couple mediium lasers without significant heat build up. a few well placed shots and u could easily damage a madcat or warhammer in the legs reducing thier movement. Then with smaller faster mechs like the locusts(that correct?) they could easily circle the targeted mech with thier speed and be a real nuisance. Then u just keep hitting them afar, The stratege worked 99% of the time.

plus their cool looking.. lol.. probably what u expected what everyone would had said when u started this thread. i really want a marauder. ;)

The original Marauder is massively overrated.

There's a lot of rather good looking redesigns and fan creations of Marauder that top the original IMO.

Its not sexy because it looks like a pimple on legs that grew a pair of crab claws and has a hair growing out the top. Shimmeringsword's revamp of the Marauder is way better looking and almost as sexy as the new Cataphract (the most amazing looking 'Mech ever).

Robotech/Macross familiarity possibly ? in that show its the glaug/command battle pod of the Zentraedi.

Me I dunno, I always liked the look of the Battlemaster.

The Marauder is a classic, but comparing it to later mech designs is a bit unfair. During Early b-tech era it was one of the better heavies: We're talking pre all core-tech here, no double heat sinks, no artemis, no ECM, basic basic. It's weapons were balanced REALLY well for Medium range, and when it was out a lot of mechs suffered from what I can only call 'Completely random weapon arrangement' syndrome. Being able to fire a PPC, the AC/10, and 1-2 medium lasers while staying heat neutral was a LOT of damage in that era. But, unsurprisingly, as tactics evolved (Read: Everyone realized that Jump Jets were absurdly, borderline *too* good), the weaknesses the mechs had became more pronounced.

(Seriously. It's a weird stance to have, but jump jets in the tabletop game completely subverted movement costs in a way that hamstrung a LOT of mechs that didn't have them).

Though I liked Robotech growing up, I prefer the BT/MW take on the Marauder's design and hope it can make it into the game. If not, i'll stick with a custom Cat-K2. ;)

Why are the Unseen 'Mechs so popular?

Most of the unseen 'Mechs, in my opinion, were the better built Battlemechs out there. Centurion had lasers in the rear? Really? Know how hard that was to use it in any shooter type game? Even on the table top... ... ... However, the Marauder, for instance, had a solid load out - short, medium, and long range firepower and decent armor. Then there is the original novels, and source books. Do you know what 'Mech that Jaime Wolf used? An Archer (an Unseen 'Mech)? Then when the blood feud with the Draconis Combine. The Coordinator, Takashi Kurita, supposedly had a pair of Archers (as I remember this) in the palace just in case Jaime Wolf came over to the Combine Palace and wanted to duel to the death. Maruader? Several peeps used this 'Mech in novels and stories...The famous Bounty Hunter (a chaacter in the BT Universe) pilots a Marauder which was originally Natasha Kerensky's. Further, Natasha's signature Warhammer (another Unseen 'Mech) is said to be the Bounty Hunter's original 'Mech.

This is off the top of my head.

So why are Unseen 'mechs so popular? It is a combination of good design and story situations. This is my humble opinion.

My opinion on this matter is this:

STOP TRYING TO USE THE UNSEEN 'MECHS! I love most of them; however, they are the main reason (well the one I blame the most) for the lack of Battletech/MechWarrior. the license for some of these Unseen 'Mechs can be very complicated and involve several companies and/or people ... which always mean trouble if there is a problem on any one specific area. Or worse, they secure the license and a year or so later... it expires or something comes up that changes the rules and Battletech/MechWarrior seem to get the worse of it.... so... to make it easy on ALL OF US... IMHO... GET RID OF THE UNSEEN 'MECHS.

I am even to play the UNSEEN 'MECHS if they were reborn with different names and different looks... i just want to play some sort of Battletech or MechWarrior.

More than likely if it makes it into the game it will look something along a similar vein to this and personally i prefer that look over the old style, as the old one looked awkward and frail. Honestly during the 3025 era I still feel the Warhammer was a superior machine all around, it is not until Clan Invasion Upgrades and "Project Phoenix" that the Marauder really started to shine with the 5-9 series.

Someone else who doesn't get the appeal of the Marauder. I dislike those arms, giant cannon on it's back and those silly legs.

Shimmering Sword on deviantart made a redesign of it that is pretty nice though.
