Isn't it possible that an Inner Sphere merc unit might make itself Clan Whatever, and it not actually have anything to do with The Clans?

I mean, they don't even know about The Clans yet, so they don't have any reason to not call themselves Clan Whatever.

There's lots of groups on present day Earth that call themselves a clan, who's to say that practice won't continue in the future Inner Sphere ;)

So, as long as they don't consider themselves part of The Clans, I don't mind merc units calling themselves clans.

Ahhh, all those IRL priate security companies caling themselves Clan Whatever...

There is no reason to call themselves Clan either. Contrary to what those pretentious blockheads believe, inventing your "custom clan" does not make you cool. And it does create a galactic paradox - why would they want to be Clan in the first place? And if they care about the lore enough to take sides on the whole IS vs Crusader Clans issue (I've yet to see a Warden "custom clan"), they why not pick an existing side?

There are units, and there are factions in the BT universe, and so it is in MWO. And the factions are limited to those in the lore - you can no more make your own clan, than you can a Successor State.

And the tallback defense for these ignorant kids is "you're a lore geek = bad. I should be allowed to make my own fantasy clans in this fantasy setting" Quick - someone remind Peter Jackson to include John 117, and House Atreides in the next Hobbit movie.

You guys are seriously offended because a few guys want to name their group of imaginary robot driving dudes a "clan" and it doesn't jive with the 'approved' list of group of imaginary robot driving dudes?

Get a life.

I'm not offended. As a matter of fact, you seem more offended than I do. Like I said, it just sits funny with me. If they REALLY want to start an unofficial clan, then they can. It's not like I'm expecting my opinion to completely disband their hopes and dreams of doing so.

If you call yourselves a Clan and follow the ways of Kerensky, I will consider accepting you as such.

However, if you are in reality a house or Merc unit, prepare to get flamed by the rabid commiunity. You are not the first to be treated thusly, and will probably not be the last.

But overall, Clan Crunchy Frog IS a possibilty when viewed in the greater scheme of things.

TL:DR

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but one way to very easily prevent player based units from calling themselves clans would be for PGI to simply disallow that word to be used in creating/naming a player unit in game. When Merc Corps and other player based units are introduced into the game, (and they will be, because no MMO can exist purely as a sandbox, and even then players will still sub-faction themselves off even if the game were a pure sandbox) the names of the cannon groups will not be usable, we know that. So just add the word "Clan" in all it's forms to that list, and problem solved.

North Korea can call themselves the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and I can't call my little group of friends a clan? That's a completely absurd idea. I have an RL friend who thinks clan should be a restricted term as well. It's fussy and infantile. Roleplayers can "accept" players and whatnot, and everyone knows what THE clans are, but as far as I'm concerned I should be fully capable of calling my group whatever I want, be it "Clan Spectre Chihuahua" or "Mighty Syndicate Regime of the Lordly Banana-Hammocks", and classifying it as whatever I feel like, whether hardcore roleplayers accept it/rage about it or not.

You forgot Clan Stone Lion btw.

If they go by timeline to game though, this won't be around for a while. We would have to lose Clan Blood Spirit and Steel Vipers and add Wolf-in-Exile also if were jumping to the Reaving years.

On a side note anyone who played Dark Age remember Clan Fuzzy bunny?

but he mentions things that don't exist anymore, and there were 20 clans to begin with - OP missed Mongoose and Widowmaker

Widowmaker did not exist in 3050, they were 28072834.

I had also edited Mongoose out previously. They were 28072868.

I have no issue with a Merc group calling themselves "the Ice Dragon clan", that eliminates the BT paradox and does not upset the hard core fans like calling themselves " Clan Ice Dragon" does. You can call your group Clan Whatever, but you are still wrong when you are playing a Mechwarrior game. The use of the term clan started with MW anyways, you might as well honor the canon and put "clan" at the end of your group's name. And the several "Clan Wolf" groups, they will likely be calling themselves the XXth Galaxy or Cluster or Trinary of Clan Wolf so as to make the playing field more rich.

I totally agree. Why should we feel bound by the lore? Don't you oppress me!

I am going to call my unit the Awesome Jedi Clan. They are a secret Clan trained by Luke Skywalker. Led by alternate reality versions of Hello Kitty and Samus from Metroid (also trained by Luke Skywalker). Their warships are the ships from Starship Troopers outfitted with the weapons from the Vorlons from Babylon 5. My unit is going to be kick ***.

Me thinks people that don't know this, wont know BT stands for battletech. Dare I suggest, MW might slip past a few of them, as (MechWarrior).

Well if you do, [Merc Corps - Outreach]. Call it what you want, be Clan Clan the Clan if you wish, just post it in the right place.

I have no heartburn with this naming convention (seeing how it is one I have posited before), only use the lower case "clan", it would be an appropriate useage in BT/MW milieus

Clan MacGregor, etc, is okay, but you better be a merc unit.

I would say that this has been a rather civil interchange amongst the posters. Thanx.

Call yourself whatever you want, so long as you can justify it within the constraints, context and setting of the Battletech universe. There's a Merc group called the 'Fighting Urukhai' for example, so you could easily justify a Merc group called the 'Jedi Knights'.

Want to be 'Clan MacGregor/something else', a merc/house/pirate unit? Sure thing.
Want to be (part of) 'Clan <non-canon name>, associated with Kerensky's Clans'? No dice. The BTverse is extremely clear on the extent of Kerensky's Clans, so you can't just pretend that there's another one. It'd be no different to claiming that in fact there's another Great House.
