Then again it is my first Mech other than Trial Mechs. Surprising the Dragon was useful. We could use more configs like this.

people don't rage about it,
nor do they complain about it either.
so I'd say its balanced at least lol and, still one of my favorite mechs to pilot
I really like 4SP, it has so balanced build, too bad it is not founder or hero mech

Catapult has had it's moments, sure, but it has never shined like the 'phract.

The problems started with the changes to slas, then kept snowballing with the denial of ECM to the founder's jenner and it's plebian variant, and the nerfing of missiles. The spider can mount ecm and it can fly around like the Master Chief on a nuclear powered pogo stick.

I don't know about that. Were you here for the great Artemis storm of 2012?

Versatile, mobile, durable and can't be disarmed.

Seriously? Personally, I too prefer the 'phracts but the Catapult has been the center of "cheese-build" rants forever. I've never seen anyone claim that the 'phracts are overpowered but there were hundreds of threads decrying the A1 for months.

The arte storm was a magnitude of chaos that most newer players can't even imagine....lol.
Every mech carrying lrm's that were faster, stronger, could fit in the arm hitbox of a jenner and flew over terrain and dropped straight down on the head box of most mechs.
So many lrm's were flying around that the sky looked like a log jam. It truly was lrm apocalypse.

They should patch the characteristics back in for one weekend a month and call it the lurmagedon tournament. Be an entertaining way to remind people what op truly is.
My vote for best mech was the Atlas. Not that I am in the least partial...lol.
The atlas has almost always been relevant.
When playing the only two mechs that consistently make me pause and or look for help is the jenner and the Atlas. And since the jenner can't run ecm I give the tie break to the atlas.
But nothing in the world is as scary to me as seeing a group of D-dc's or Jenners rumbling at you. You just get that but pucker feeling...lol.

Pardon?
The whole development of MWO, for all the months until the fairly recent Rise of the Poptarts, consisted of nothing but Catapult moments. CTF was always the underdog with its low slung arms, low torso twist and gimped arm range, visible side torsos and straight up inferior hardpoints/low tube count on 2X. Even with missiles nerfed through the ground, non-3D Cataphracts are still underdogs to both Catapults (invisible side torsos, better twist on all weapons, jj on most) and Jaggermechs (high mounted guns for ridge humping, XL+AC40).
Be it guasscat, lrm boat, streak raidboss, SRM36 white whale or the odd AC40, Catapult held the metagame in a deathgrip for half a year.
Please observe this handy graph for an illustrated history of the evolution of MWO metagame since early closed beta until around February 2013:
