The only reason why they did this is to limit the rage posting locality... and as an excuse (both legit and lame) to move certain types of posts to a better locale (like, the TDM threads).
With that said, the inmates are still running the asylum and all you did was improve the "mouse trap". People will still whine and still post and still post about other people whining.
Business as usual.

Good points.
The problem I had with it was related and yet polar, where the raging silly posters and well thought out posts were directed to the same official post, even if they weren't related. All that did was turn the official post into a raging silly post with bits of well thought out dialect here and there. In my mind, I see nothing wrong with multiple threads about, say, ECM, if they are discussing different things about it. Say, One is discussing why ECM is only on certain mechs and how the meta would change if it was allowed on others, why another topic decried the missile jam and how it affects LRM users, while another discusses perhaps the IFF cloak. You *could* merge all 3 into 1 topic, and while getting a good mix of how all 3 topics interact, you weaken any argument for or against each change as a whole, and end up with either nothing being changed (current state of ECM), or drastic changes (LRMs over the many iterations). We need a PPC/AC approach to it, slight changes and then investigating those.

I apologize for my prior crack at you because I had just assumed you were another one of the toxic masses. My mistake.
The problem is that those threads in GD were usually made up of a majority of people just screaming bloody murder about their chosen topic while completely ignoring the interlinking issues. On more than a few occasions when I pointed out why an issue was more complex than everyone was saying I'd get shouted down and accused of trolling. GD was a toxic cesspool that yielded very little productive discourse because of all the instigators constantly stirring **** up.
You can still absolutely have multiple threads discussing a complex problem. The topics the forums got broken into are still very broad so it's not like there are SRM only subforums or a first church of dakka where you're only allowed to discuss dakka and the applications there of. Interlinked issues will still end up being readily apparent, they just won't be able to be turned into PGI LIED, ELECTRONS DIED, **** shows.
The only thing we've really lost is an area where people can just make threads that are nothing but purely unproductive bile. Hell, just look at the people truly outraged at this. They're all the usual suspects that loved for nothing more than to wander from thread to thread commenting on how awful PGI is and how they betrayed us and how they stole Christmas, and blahblahblah.
I am not a PGI apologist. I do severely disagree with them on certain issues and don't disagree for an instant that they've ****** up in the past. The difference is that when I voice my concerns I don't do it with two pounds of hyperbole with a layer of creamy ad hominem frosting. I do my best to do it constructively so that they'll be more receptive to the feedback. All of the concerns we have are still easily voiced within these forums.

I disagree with that, as by saying that GD was nothing but "purely unproductive bile", you did indeed just indulge in the very conduct you decry, the "two pounds of hyperbole with a layer of creamy ad hominem frosting", since while GenDis DID indeed have a lot of crap, it was also GenDis that specifically was used to force teh Devs to rethink 3PV, and ditch the P2W Coolant plan.
I have no axe to grind with you, but your post could be taken better at face value minus the hyperbole you so strongly protest.

Except you completely misinterpreted what I said. I didn't say any absolutes in my post like you claim I did, merely that the majority of posts were complete ***. Some good things came out of GD but it's absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of crap that forum shat out on a daily basis.

Careful, he's soon to begin with ad hominem attacks followed by ignoring you.
