They just need to make damage done less of a deciding factor...something like this...
  • (damage/15) + 30k + 20a + 50w + 25s = score

k = kill
a = assist
w = win
s = survive

This formula puts more emphasis on kills & assists, with damage only helping eg
  • 500 damage, 3k, 3a, win & survive = 258 (an above average player)
  • 1000 damage, 0k, 7a, win & survive = 281 (focus firing team player)
  • 150 damage, 6k, 1a, win & survive = 285 (kill stealer)
  • 1000 damage, 5k, 3a, win & survive = 351 (top flight player)
(Think all the math there is correct). The top players will get the top places, the people gaming the system will get a lot of damage, but not a lot else, your kill stealer will make good points, and your team player will also make a good showing.

Take the best 5 or 10 matches, maybe even make it an average score, and the leaderboards might not seem quite so insurmountable.

easist thign to do would be make it so kills/assists point reward work just like EXP.

if you did majority of the damage and kill the guy congrats you get the most points for the kill, if you swoop in at last second and get the kill with 1 point of damage sorry you dont get much of crap.

Something is seriously wrong with lights and their roles when we see score and damage profiles like those produced by Koreanese. Thing is he/she is not the exception here. We all know why lights are able to play like this and it is, IMO, down to the arcade style gameplay that MWO engenders through poor in game mechanics.

Koreanese, what was the build you were playing in the 'heavy chassis' bracket?

I played 6 or 7 games last night (heavy bracket) and finished on the top of the leaderboard (in game and not the tournament) for all of them but no matter how much I contributed to a win, my type of game play is just not rewarded by the tournament scoring system. By this I target weak points and take out mechs fast rather than building up a large damage profile. Also on terrain capture mode, I play for the win so sometimes do little damage. Given this I am inclined to think that PGI are working with a very narrow band of what is considered 'skilled gameplay'.

Eh, which 3D and what were the specifics of the build? If you mean the CTF-3D, well that only has two energy slots! Note, I was asking for his 'heavy build' including which consumables etc.

Why is it a bad idea to weigh kills heavily? Because it leads to kill stealing. There is NO damage stealing, you have to earn your keep.

But hey, I would appreciate a tournament that valued team play and that encouraged different playing styles by perhaps having different rewards based on weight class. I'm sure this would not fly with the community, but for me assaults are all about dishing out damage and receiving damage. Heavies more about helping assaults finish off wounded enemies. Lights (should) be more about scouting and capping. Mediums overlap with heavies and lights.

Assault:
Primary: damage
Secondary: kills/assistes
Tertiary:spotting/capping

Heavies:
Primary: kills/assists
Secondary: damage
Tertiary: Spotting/capping

Medium:
Primary: Kills/assists
Secondary: Spotting/capping
Tertiary: Damage

Lights:
Primary: Spotting/capping
Secondary: Kills/assists
Tertiary: Damage

Something like that

Oh I should add, if you want to get some idea of how many people are playing MWO this week, take part in the tournament and play as bad as you can i.e. do no damage etc. That way you will finish at the bottom (or close to) of the bracket and it will give you some indication of the total opted in. I have done this on my alt accounts.

(ideas)

Capping needs to have a system to reward it put in place for this to work. Different systems for different weight classes is an interesting idea, but it seems rather complex. I'm still in favor of:
  • Use XP as a system instead of a new tournament equation.
  • Have a contest with rewards for different mechs instead of different weight classes, so Light-Mediums like the Cicada don't have to compete against heavier mediums, Awesomes have a day in the sun, and other advantages.

The one game I saw Koreanese in he spent the most of the game baiting mechs that were chasing him like he was a ******* unicorn or something into the rest of his team.

He ended with like 5 kills and 400 some odd damage, because the boneheads on my team kept falling for it over and over. I watch like four mechs go trudging into that kill box ingoring all of the heavier mechs around.

Just had my best round of all time, happened smack in the middle of this tournament, hopefully it will help me crack top 10 today in heavies -

Posted Image

The tough thing is getting 5 rounds of 110+ match scores in a day, at some point I get pretty exhausted due to the lack of variety in the meta and lack of immersion in the game itself.

Finished 9th in the heavy tournament on the first day. It got a bit boring since the tactic was to first hit every enemy mech so that you get the 8 assist at least, then start taking them one by one. The thing is all about kill stealing really. You must move quickly and aggressively - it's all or nothing.
Alpine suited best for me. I used Gauss from the hills first and then brawled. You must have luck with the team: too good team and you don't get enough kills - and with bad team you are all by yourself. With enough games and mixture of luck and skill you get good points.

I do not doubt this. I have led teams where I have asked them to use this tactic. I equate this tactic to playing an mmorpg and pulling mobs to the group. Even so, such a tactic is often an exception and does not account for the damage profiles I see some light pilots rack up. From my experience it is all brawl, brawl, arcade stomp and destroy. In terms of subtly and depth of game play MWO has yet to even come close to MWLL, even when all players chose to drop only in mechs.

Hi Soy. I don't suppose that 3D build you were running is the 3 PPC one?

Yes it is of course, this is serious business so naturally I'm running cheese. Yesterday for half the day I ran my main 4xLL build but I couldn't get enough kills to get high enough rounds to push me past the top 40, now I'm approaching like a maniacal thief basically.

Yep, that`s koreanese.

I think only Garth is better for creating tunnel vision, because EVERYONE wants to frag a dev at any cost, koreanese has to **** them off, first ;)
