That is my favorite 100+ 'Mech. I seem to recall a varient with a rotary Gauss rifle (the most amazing weapon ever!).

what is the point off a mech over 100 tons it the ground itself would not be able to support it efficently and the mech would fall all the time as rock crumbled under 13 tons per square foot of presure

On brother i love it when people on forums like this, dedicated to deca-tonnage walking tanks, try to use the rational/logic stick to beat someone else with.
125-135 tons is so much less practical than 100 tons walking tank ...................... you people are killing me !!!!!!!!

For those that need to know, the official rules concerning super-heavy 'Mechs can be found in Jihad: Final Reckoning as well as some for Robotic Drone 'Mechs. The WoB LAMs are also found there (though no rules concerning their use.)

Let's worry about getting a working game with the huge variety of normal sized mechs first before we start looking for exceptions to the rules.

You know, 135 tons on the Ares is a lot of weight for a mech whose strongest weapons are a pair of LRM-5's. Not to mention all that Endo Steel, wasted :P

Well if the timeline works out the way it should we would all mostly be dead. The ares a 135 ton mech was created in 3132 and has a lot of weapons. And would probably be a very very tall mech. It is also piloted by 3 people that is a bit impractical. Pluse if I saw that on the battlefield I would probably wet myself and the run for my life.

If I saw the Ares I would say Challenge Accepted and proceed to dominate it, with a Crab.

100+ was listed as extreme tech. Yes not for another hundred years. Think they went to 250tonmax and needed XXL engines and some special gyro Heard about them back in mid 90s.

NO CANON DESIGNS WERE MADE BACK THEN.

You might be thinking of the Orca from TLTP: FTSI; it had a Gauss Cannon/20 (plus three Large Grazers and 3rd Gen missiles.)

It all went downhill fast in the later stages of the story.

Thankfully with their 1 day RL is 1 day in the IS we will never have to see those abominations!

Jesus i wish some of you people would actually think prior to allowing your fingers to do stuff.

Yo Sherlock ........... how many people "pilot" the average main battle tank?!?!?
Or the average attack helicopter ?!?!?! ........... doh

oh i get it you assumed that 3 guys would all be fighting over who got to drive right ........ obviously it wouldn't work like that.

The original creators loosely went with making the techs say "it becomes too impractical in some aspects and/or gain no benefits". IE; quickly diminishing returns on power to weight ratio.

A big example just by using the expanded engine rating table originally from Maximum Tech source book.

To power a 150 ton 'mech at a 3/5 movement requires an engine rating of 450.
Under most basic equipment:
1) Engine: 133.5 tons
2) Cockpit: 3 tons
3) Gyroscope: 4.5 tons
4) Internal Structure: 15 tons
5) Jump Jets: [we'll not use any to give maximum load capacity]
Total left for armor, weapons, other equipment: -6 (yes, you are over weight by 6 tons)

Lightest general equipment possible
1) XXL Engine: 44.5 tons
2) Cockpit: 3 tons
3) Gyroscope: 2.5 tons
4) Endo Steel Internal Structure: 7.5
5) Jump Jets: [we'll not use any to give maximum load capacity]
Total left armor, weapons other equipment: 92.5

Now the cost, Battle Value, and lore availability just went up by many magnitudes with this 'possible' weight saving build. On top of that, your number of empty critical slots is greatly reduced. There may be a lot of weight left but you won't be able to fit much in.

How. About. ****. No. While I realize that 100 tons is a totally arbitrary number, if you break that, where does it end? Should we have Unitron sized battlemechs too? Why don't we also add Megamaid:

The Ares sucked. Tri-pod designs make zero sense. Try again

Man **** ALL that Wobbies nonsense. The Jihad was terribly executed as a storyline concept.

The 'Rotary Gauss Guns' are mentioned in the PDF it originally appeared in, I think. Though the Gauss Cannons in Free Taiw...St. Ives seemed to be some sort of Rapid-Fire weapon as well...

135 tons :P

would not want to see any mech over 100 t in the game ;)

^ Three cockpits, each a nice and big target on a nice and big 'Mech. For something that moves around 28 kph, it better do some fast torso twisting to keep the gauss slugs away from the MechWarriors.

Not sure if this is canon. It is only a rumor.

The Ares represents a series of 'Mechs that are built to exceed the 100-ton mark. The Ares uses a unique tripodal chassis to support the 'Mechs weight bridging the gap between the biped 'Mechs and the quad 'Mechs. The Ares has its roots in the Rhodes Project and was first fielded sometime after 3132. Although the manufacturer of the 'Mech remains unknown intelligence has pointed to an Ares factory being located on the world of Kaus Australis in Prefecture I of the Republic of the Sphere. This intelligence, as well as the potential of the Ares was strong enough to provoke both the Lyran Commonwealth and Clan Nova Cat to raid the location in search of this factory.
While there has been a great deal of hype surrounding each version of the Ares 'Mechs, they have roughly the same amount of weapons as can be loaded onto a 100 ton chassis and are outgunned by some Assault 'Mechs dating from the 3060s. One unique aspect of these 'Mechs is that they are manned with three personnel.

As part of an experimental project, only a few selected MechWarriors can operate this 'Mech. It is also notable that, as a secret project, most of those MechWarriors are the research scientist's children or family and some also received training since their very childhood.
