From a realism point of view, 100 tons is already extremely high. A mech that weighs more then that would probably just sink into the ground and fall if it stepped on anything that isn't pavement.

Tripod mechs are stupid.

I entirely missed that point. You're right though. Mechs that weigh even more would likely just sink into the ground and be stuck unless they were on strong pavement or pure rock. This is also more reason why you have to spread weight out, which means more legs or a rolling tread. So if we go up higher, we won't have 2 legged Mechs anymore. We'll have tripods or quad legs or rolling tanks. It won't even resemble Battletech anymore. It'll turn into some future war game with giant walking turrets.

There generally aren't any 100+ ton mechs (and those that woefully "exist" are maligned) for the same reason that there aren't any 100+ ton tanks (even though there were plans for them).

Because for the same money that it would cost to field one, you may get two or more ones that can actually move. Atlas is enough of an artillery magnet already.

Bringing the efficiency of increased engine size is only valid while playing by the official game rules, which do not apply to real situations. If we stick to game rules, I'd say that we should balance the current mechs first (if only weapon/armor matters, why should I pick a Mad Cat over an Atlas?) before going ahead.

Regarding ground to size issue: bringing this realism into game will already made Atlas un-operateable, since in heavy rain, sloppy hills and rivers it will most likely get a couple of feet into the ground. Also, this is easy solved by making the feet bigger, or more numerous. Also, the mechs will barely walk, and most likely run on chains like tanks, which bring us to the issue of why go with two legs.

There is that which shall not be named, and the Omega, who had the audacity to put four Gauss rifles with nine tons of ammunition each on it.

Since everything goes by Metric, and if we really were to lable the tons used in Battlemechs as Tonnes (Or metric tons), than a 100 ton Atlas would be, in reality, 110 tonnes.

As a Jenner pilot I'd love to see such a lumbering, slow and useless target moving over the battlefield. Given the preponderance of noob or less skilled pilots that tend to be attracted to assaults because they think that they can last longer I'm all for 100 + mechs. As a final thought how about a 200 ton + mech for the really, really crappy pilots??

No, aside from the fact nothing bigger than 150t has ever been made, now you're just being dumb. Any mech the size of the Omega with that kind of weaponry is meant for Fire Support and should have at least 1-2 mechs guarding it so no-one can sneak up behind it. Even were you to sneak up on it, you wouldn't have the firepower needed to destroy it before it's support showed up.

No thanks, the only reason I'd be tempted to see a 100+ Mech would be for the M.A.C.II Destroid from Macross, which is what the Omega is blatantly trying to emulate. Even then, the MACII moved like a lethargic slug, and was never really more than a Mobile Artillery platform.

As some people have already posted stone rhinos (favorite mech for me so props to you guys) and other mechs bordering on/in super assault category most of you know what your talking about. For those that do not the argument is simple. A 100 ton Atlas has a top speed of what 55km/h? (I am talking standard here not armor and weapon stripped for bigger engine.) You reach a threshold where it becomes impractical and you are no longer talking about a mech, but more of a moving fortress. The great houses could try something like that, but when a light/med/heavy can move faster than your torso twist rate they can sit behind you and blow through your armor. That is completely separate from cost to research/construct/deploy/repair something that big. Lastly, two more words, 'orbital strikes' and that should be enough for anyone to give up on the walking fortress idea.

um, saying tripod and quad mechs would make it not battletech ignores the fact there were at least 2 quad mechs designed before 3060, per the game. the king crab was a quad and so was the behemoth. they are canon and they are legitimate battlemechs. but, unlike that joke people keep bandying about, they didn't require 3 pilots. i think the behemoth might have had a second seat and a C3 in it, for comms, but i can't recall full details and i'm too lazy to look them up, right now. kids just suck the energy out of us parents. regardless, quad mechs aren't an abomination. just a rarity. over 100 tons, on the other hand, would be an abomination. and ridiculous, besides. 100 is good enough for the top end. don't get all WoT with it's promise of tier 11 and tier 12 tanks, in the future.

Officially you are right. But Thanks to me knowing a few people, people who made the Super Heavy Mechs as a house rule, I do have a 200 ton or two. I also had them about 10 years ago! Due to their blazing land speed they are not as tough as one would think, But they are a very effective siege machine.

As of 3050 the IS only have access to two Quad Mechs. The Scorpion and the Goliath. Only 3 Clans have Quads. They are Thunder Stallion, Snow Fox and the Fire Scorpion. 2 of these clan would not gain worlds in the IS until after th Clan Invasion was over. The third would not make it into the IS until 3071. More Quad designs start trickling out of the factories starting in the mid 50s.

As for 100+ tons mechs I believe there are only 2 deigns ever made.

The first was the 150 ton Superheavy BattleMechs named the Omega was produced in the 3070s. The Factory on Terra was destroyed during Operation SCOUR. The bulk of these 'Mechs were deployed in and around the Devils Peak command post used for Precentor Martial Cameron St. Jamais' final stand, but some Omegas also saw service around Hilton Head and in Cairo. "all of the prototypes produced by Skobel are believed to have been destroyed in action."

The second was the 135 ton Superheavy BattleMechs named the Ares unique tripodal chassis was produces in 3132. Non were ever seen and are rumored. The video is a fan made video. The Battletech timeline is not up to this time period. So we will have to wait to see if they are really made. the description on Sarna does say "The Ares represents a series of 'Mechs that are built to exceed the 100-ton mark." Does this mean there are other Superheavy BattleMechs? One unique aspect of these 'Mechs is that they are manned with three personnel.

The Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte (lit.: Land Cruiser P. 1000 "Rat") was a design for a super-heavy tank the Nazi Germany had o the drawing board during World War II.

The Landkreuzer P 1500 Monster was a German pre-prototype super-heavy tank designed during World War II, representing the apex of the German extreme tank designs.
