Jade Falcon
Ghost Bear
Smoke Jaguar
Wolf

There is no Clan flibbertygibbert that did some stuff and then some other stuff.

If they weren't in the novels (or I don't remember them from the novels) they never existed.

Why would Kerensky split his group up into a kajillion poopy little pieces? How would they even have enough equipment to colonize that many separate homeworlds, each with their own self-sustaining civilizations? Especially given that clan snow badger's homeworld appears to be some sort of frozen hell, and clan fire burrock/pixie dragon lives in a parallel dimension, like Asgard from the Marvel Universe?

Where did all of these Clans even come from (IRL)? When were they conceived of? Certainly not from the very beginning...

?

When were the fake clans introduced into the canon anyway?

The megaman named ones. The ones that look like the parts of their names were created by picking them out of a hat while doing mad libs.

Also, can we start our own subclans? Like, Clan Wheezing Rabbit, Clan Arrogant Badger, Clan Flaccid Underpants?

How about Clan Plaid Apricot? Clan Angry Hairdresser?

Please, everyone knows it's not Clan Arrogant Badger. It's Clan Drunken Badger. Get it right!

Also, before anything gets too out of hand, http://www.sarna.net is your friend. It has something to say about the "only 5 clans" thing on the off chance that this is a serious thread (which I highly doubt).

It actually is a serious question, but there may be elements which are tongue in cheek. I would welcome a serious answer.

So is it just a genuine coincidence that the Clans with the decent names are most prominent and all the clown car clans only get mentioned obliquely in fluff, like blurry footage of bigfoot?

Also, were all of the Clans created at the same time IN REAL LIFE (as in, by the author(s)) or what?

The story of Battletech is the story of the struggle of the common man against copyright law. For a copyright-able name you need to assemble two unrelated words together. A crocodile is not copyright-able. But a semi-aquatic reptile called a vice-jaw is.

Clan Wolf fails as a copyright-able property due to only have one word.

Clan Jade Falcon fails because it is clearly a reference to the movie "The Jade Falcon"

Ghost Bear and Smoke Jaguar actually could be copyrighted and thus we can assume that they came later.

As for the others, they where likely created to fill books of optional game material.

There was ever really one true Clan and it's name was Wolverine.

Sadly it's awesomeness was so superior, it's light so bright, that all the other 19 clans (at the time) conspired to snuff them out. In the end the Clans started a precedent that has continued ever since...they failed.

All the Clans have ever been able to do since was to dwindle their own numbers further and lose to Quasi-Religious Monks who pray to transmitters before turning them on.

Seriously, a Warrior society bred through Eugenics and armed with the most advanced technology lost to a bunch of green pilots out on their first live-fire action. Only Clan Wolf wasn't a total embarrassment and it's 'rising star' is a captured inner sphere 'Freebirth'.

Sarah McEvedy saw the writing on the wall and got most of her troops the heck out of Dodge. (In case you don't already know, let me save you a trip to Sarna.net. McEvedy was the Khan of Clan Wolverine and the commanding officer of the 331st Royal BattleMech Division before that. Where she took them and what they did is still anyone's guess.)

Considering how hard it is to get our computers to work sometimes, I can understand why.

Only 5 Clans start the Inner Sphere Invasion. Clan Wolf, Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar, Ghost Bear, and Steel Viper. Clan Diamond Shark, and Nova Cat were added to the Inner Sphere Invasion after the election of Ulric Kerensky to the office of ilKhan. These 7 clans took part in the Battle of Tukayyid.
