Well, why can you buy items for real money in an unreleased game? "Open Beta" is just sth. companies like to do these days. Just to keep expetations low. Or did you see ppl writing on the forums in a way like "Omg i paid 50$ and HUD is bugged as hell!"? Players are more forgiving if you just call it open beta.

They started doing this with Dota 2. Their reasoning was "Everybody is able to play it and pay for it already and the developer and the publisher are earning money with it, so why wait for an arbitrary release date, where nothing changes for the people playing the game".
Because, let's face it, it's the truth. A F2P game is only really finished if it is dead.
They revisit games like this down the line and they will do it here (and change their rating if needed).

And if someone is interested: They mostly complain about the new player experience, the lack of help and explanations and the low amount of gameplay modes (and nothing for solo players, no mode against an AI for example). They liked the amount of detail on the mechs, the mechlab and its possibilities, obviously the mechs themselves, the "feeling" of controling a mech, the gameplay, the sounds and effects, the overall balancing with its different roles (they didn't go into specifics here, probably because balancing changes the most. They seem to think that the game works well, just not perfect), the Elo-based matchmaking, the amount of variation between the maps and the fairness of the payment system.
And they mentioned that the community is mostly nice and able to play smart.

I spend money on it and I play all day long. I would call it pretty much "released" if you ask me :)

Yeah but they should look at this game again, when it is officially released, because in the next 3-4 months they release huge gamechanging things like Community Warfare, UI 2.0 etc that will affect gameplay and fun in a positive way!

Of course, they will do that. They tested World of Tanks for example twice now, once in 2011 with 77points and last december with 84points.

I read the article. The testers are stunned by the effects, the concept of modifications. Yet, they are remarking the lack of content (maps, game modes) and that the game requires teamplay and support from the forums to be enjoyable.

It's a fair review, but I don't get the high rating. Uniqueness I guess is the selling point.

It's a very addicting game, purely based on gameplay.

This also happend with the new Aliens Colonial Marines before it was actualy released. 9/10 everywhere, glowing reviews! We all know how this turned out!!

For those that do not know, this is called Paying a games review website for a good review to boost sales.

In tomorrow's lesson we'll cover misleading advertising and blind loyalty and how laping it up like golden milk ensures the game becomes stagnant and devoid of any real fun. ;)

There's very little reason to post here now.

If this game got an 85 in its current state, I would love to see what it would score when it has its **** in order.

Bare in mind, I love this game, but I'm not blind to its huge issues.

You only see the huge issues after you´ve spent some time with a game. They play like 5 hours and then make the article.

First: Aliens: Colonial Marines was universally disliked by all reviewers. Go to metacritic if you don't believe me. The developer changed 3 times during the course of development, graphics engine got downgraded and it was a total mess in the end. Everybody knew it before; nobody gave it "glowing reviews". There was no "demo" so some people bought into the marketing hype and got burned in the end.

Second: MWO is a game you can currently play and judge for yourself. The finished game won't be much different from what we have now, and the review is written by this in mind. This game has solid foundations and there's no way PGI screwing this up in any major way, not after being so close to the launch now.

Third: PGI probably didn't even know a gaming magazine from Germany called "Gamestar" existed before, how could they bribe them?

It just baffles me the most negative guys in these forums are all founders.
