Whatever anyone may think, I applaud the OP for this good guide. It was well written and he spent a lot of his time writing it and I for one, am thankful.

*edit*

Looking at the discussion evolve here......

Alastair you make good points when you referred to MMA etc and frankly, a person using a build that fits them will out peform anyone using a "great" build that does not fit them.
An example, a friend of mine who is a natural boxer. He is simply excellent with his hands. He also trains TKD with me. Arguably TKD is superior at kicking range. He does not do so well at long range even though he is good at TKD. If he resorts to boxing, arguably inferior at kicking range his results skyrocket.
I do better using BJJ vs kicking.....point is that as long as the build suits you and how you think/move etc you will always perform above what is expected. Just because 9/10 "pros" use it does not mean it will work for you. You must remember, if all your opponents expect cookie cutter their responses and actions will be geared towards it. Then your best build won't work so well.....

PEEF, whilst I acknowledge your obvious skills and ability and agree with a lot of what you say-you need to work on the attitude, you come across as very arrogant and superior in your demanour.
If you truly want to make light players out there better you need to be more approachable with your interactions. A lot of people will be put off with facing the wall of ego-surely swallowing a bit of pride and getting every last player a little bit more skillful matters more?
I'm sure a lot of people are like me: If I don't respect someone I'm a lot less likely to listen to what they have to say, no matter how much sense they may be talking.

I have to admit, I'm new to the game, but so far I havent seen the need for an XL engine on my Ravens. Sure it would be nice, but on my Raven 3L I'm now doing 114 with the speed tweak which is perfectly fine for me. I faught off a Medium laser Jenner with it yesterday, as in forced him to run from the point he was capping which meant my mission was a success. Concidering how easy it is to hit the torsos on the raven and how much else you have to give up for the speed, I'll take a standard engine. It works for me, and keeps me in the fight for the little bit longer.

I am thinking of making my 4x line How I'm running my 2X right now (LRM15+ Artamis, 3 small pulse and a TAG + BAP) but the snag is that it has 2 energy hardpoints so I'd be giving up 50% of my energy weaposn as opposed to 25%, and aside from machine guns theres no balistic weapon light enough for the other hand. I dont think it would work as well, and I would be quite slow with the standard engine (and I cant afford an XL yeat anyway) I'm running with an SRM6 + Machine guns+ 2ML build ata mo and that works sort of ok for grinding, but I put on 2 flamers yesterday and that was hilarious. Really close range but it had me giggling through the match. I imagine you have to wait for people to be hurt to really make it effective though.

I'm currently playing as a light hunter in a Shadowhawk with BAP, target decay, 1xLBX10, 4xStreaks and 2xMLas; it speeds along at 97 kph. I'm not a very good player but my hit rate with the LBX10 has increased to 75%; I'm getting better at hitting lights running circles with me. In find that the proper defence for lights is running away or operating with other lights in groups at least three (bad hit registration is actually the best defence but Streaks seem to register just fine? )

My point: at 114kph you can be a support mech behind your own line or give your life in softening up your attacker, but you cannot be that lone long-distance ECM Raven that is actually very dangerous, as you have no defence against fast light-hunting mediums. I suggest you get your speed up! B)

Sounds like a nasty build, run a streaktaro myself. Speed is indeed the best weapon. Unless you have JJ as a light, you might struggle to survive vs some of the specialised builds cropping up.
