It'd be cool though when any range combat is great, combined with balanced weapon/equipment viability/variety... soon™ (?).

I don't think I "get" this issue ...

Sniping exists in ANY game that has weapons that are effective at long range. The only way to reduce or eliminate sniping is to eliminate the long range weapons or make them so useless that they are not worth using. Would I want to play a mech game where there were no long range weapons ... No ... I would not.

How do you deal with snipers? Well ... you do not walk straight towards them, Rushing a PPC Stalker across the open in your Atlas is almost guaranteed to lose an Atlas ... despite that, I've seen lots of folks try this technique.

The main counter to snipers (other than jump snipers which have been rather effectively reduced by the jump jets adjustments) is to use the terrain to close the range while giving them limited opportunity to fire at you ... AND ... to do this with team mates at your side so that when you get to the sniper the odds are at least even if not 2 or 3 to 1.

Anyway, at the moment, in my opinion, sniping is just another play style ... which can be easily overcome by team work and tactics.

No...no..no... Ya got it wrong!

You noticed it because you were standing around smelling flowers and scratching your bumm...

STANDING AROUND IS A PROBLEM! :)

Hmmm... If I notice you're standing around does that make me equally culpable for the sniping meta? :)

I thought anything I wasn't good at, didn't understand or couldn't effectively counter because of lack of skill was a problem in this game. :)

Hate to break the circle jerk but I have a couple questions:

1. Has anything ever been overpowered in a video game?
2. What criteria do you use to determine if something is overpowered?

I don't have a problem with sniping, but I do have a problem when people use the same lack of logic to dismiss a claim as the people who made the original claim.

Standing around is underpowered and needs to be buffed. Smelling flowers should give your mech 15% to damage resistance and a 20% to cooling when scratching your 4ss.

To get it you need to consider that the game has roots in TT and TT has a random hit location. when PGI ported TT they included something called convergence. This player controlled skill based targeting element was intended to replace the random hit location. it would reward skill targeting and patience with reduced damage spread. it would simulate the random hit table from TT.

Convergence was fundamentally flawed and removed sorta... the convergence rates was set to extremely high levels and thus we have the pin point accuracy for single shot weapons at max range. even with damage reduction the boated aspect make them do respectable damage. all in one spot at max range. if you over heat its ok... you at long range.

The sniping form of game play is taking advantage of a broken game mechanic. This affect the over all game. It make it less fun. add to that pop tarting and i be leave it kills the new player experience, thus the long term survivability of the game.

this is good.

while i agree with many that it is fun to point and laugh at some whiners who simply cry about anything that killed them, we must not allow that to blind us so that we are no longer capable of having meaningful and objective consideration of balance issues

Damn Splatcats are still to damn good, I should know, I got killed by one a while ago while trying to use the standing around in one place tactic, we need to further nerf SRMs even more into the ground to the point that they are as lethal as confetti, because paper cuts still hurt.

You know what's really OP? When I stand still on my light mech and get ripped apart in one alpha. I should be able to stand still and take punishment. It's clear PGI has no love for the light mechs at all. They're totally unplayable. :)
