I'm hoping eventually critical hits on engines, gyros, cockpits, and whatnot get implemented and they just haven't gotten around to it yet.

The rules AFIK is the same as TT, and you loose the engine, you are done. End of story.

The gyro's took a critical hit with the JJ nerf.
Also side coring is kind of the point of XL's. It is called 'high risk high reward' game play.

Like an extra 1/sec heat generation (same as having 2 engine hits in TT), or some other downside to make up for not immediately dying to ST loss with an XL.

I'd think that they'd be working on implementing engine critical damage leading up to the clans in part for that very reason. I'd make basic game play more interesting, too, if you were to see heat spiking as engines take hits.

I wanted to use a standard engine CTF 4X, but I died from losing my CT most of the time, and even when I survived, I'd lost half my firepower or more.
I tried a standard engine in the Highlander and the problem was the same. You rarely lose your side torsos first, and when you do, you die shortly afterwards or your firepower is dramatically reduced.
I don't think XLs need to be tweaked, but if anything they're too good.
