Why can't UI 2.0 be more immersive?

Because of

This kind of thing is always a waste of resources that could be better used on actually making things that affect game play.

I want to fight in giant robots, not stand in a room. Why? Because I could just stand up, and find myself in a room with a desk and computer.

^_^

I agree with Mav though. Freelancer style avatars with ingame voip and a real pilots quarters or hangar would be great. war thunder really awed me with this stuff. heck, we don't even have avatar pictures, I had hoped for an eve style avatar creator.

Maybe one day in the future.

Immersion factor alone makes me vote yes. Mechwarrior 2 and 4 I remember most fondly because of how the UI's were set up. You may not have actually been walking around anywhere, but there was at least a feel of moving from room to room, or at least a small difference in the 'vibe' of each interface piece.

Yes, it's a waste of resources to some, but it's not exactly like 3D modelers tend to be much decent at more than rudimentary code that the other programmers pretty much have to develop on their own anyway.

Reminds me of Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance, where your living quarters had your achievements on display, such as debris from your first kill, gifts from characters you'd helped, trophies from missions, medallions, etc. Great concept.

I don't think we're talking an explorable 3D realisation like Eve's ill-advised Captains Quarters (that said, at least they recognise when they've made unpopular decisions). More like a graphical representation that makes the current UI functions part of an interface more reminiscent of a point-and-click game.

That, for example, is the main menu from Freespace 2.

Edit: *cough* just noticed this is a necroed thread I posted this in before. Still, point stands. It's hardly a resource-intensive project.

Did not read it, but I am familiar with the concept.

Great idea, I really liked those screens, gave a greater sense of being a mechwarrior.

Two thumbs up !!

Anything would be better than what we have now. Your idea would definitely work well for existing players and new players.

Cool. I've always hoped (envisioned) more depth to the front end. Add this idea to my idea of having a hirable support/repair crew and we are talking.

Sometimes you want to interface with the game a little beyond repeating matches, amirite?

I could get behind something like that, if the prices were reasonable. Having a Solaris game world with individual stables and a front office would be cool. Though I wonder if PGI would allow the retro ceiling fan to be bought with CBills alongside MC's.

Glad this poll is still going after 6 months. This is a really awesome idea and could potentially be UI 2.5 or 3.0?
Regardless of time frame, this should be the ultimate goal for front end.

One of my favourite all time games 'Privateer 2' had actual video sequences of a bar that the pilots were able to visit between missions:

Something like this would be awesome.
