Best starter Atlas....
Don't play assault mechs 'till you have mastered at least on chassis (means all 3 variants on elite) in the medium or lower heavy wight class !
Why ?
Assault mechs can be fearsome enemys and a real pain in the ***....FOR YOUR OWN TEAM.
Nothing is more frustrating than the biggest weapon in your team beeing piloted by a new inexperienced player.
You have not only the biggest firepower in your team but you will be the biggest LOSS of firepower if your mech goes down prematurely.
A wrong placed Assaultmech is nothing more than a oversized target.
Get cought in the open at the wrong moment and you are stone dead.
Your turn rate, your speed and your size will make it next to impossible to correct any positioning failures.

But with that line of reasoning, wouldn't trying to master an Assault as soon as possible be a good thing?

The reasoning in either direction makes about as much sense as hiding in a cardboard box.

In that case it makes as much sense as hiding in a metal barrel in a cardboard box warehouse.

Psyche! Any kind of warehouse is bound to contain naturally-occurring metal barrels!

Anyway, I'm happy with my DC-C as it stands. Got ENDO and a 325 Engine in. Just playing around with different weapons.

However, even at max armour I could fit a larger engine. If I scale back some armour on the legs and whatnot, I could probably fit a 350 Engine which would give me four internal double heatsinks over my current three. Plus some extra KPH of course.

Sounds like a good idea...?

how much armor we talking about?? i personally recommend running the atlas with the amount of armor you plan on running to get in the bigger engine, then using that experience to decide if its still a useful amount f armor or if you sacrificed to much, and you dont want to drop thatmuch money o an engine just to find out it makes the mech worse right?

just so you know pugs arent known to shoot legs, i know someone who runs 30 armor on the legs of his atlas  not saying who though.......

Yeah I've noticed that trend. Store all my ammo in the legs

Around 60 on each leg and 65 on each arm. Could of course reduce the legs further to reinforce the arms a bit, like 50/75.

6 more tons of Engine?!!? Somehow I can't imagine that is a good plan. Besides... seems like there are a reasonable number of slots available already. Lose 6 tons to gain 3 slots? I'm probably never going to pilot an Atlas but that doesn't seem ideal.

I dunno, isn't the head sort of a big obvious target on the Atlas?

The head is your Right Eye... visual left when shooting at one and no... it isn't very large.

Oh lol.

I actually one-shotted an enemy Atlas who popped his head up over a hill.

Must've been even luckier than I thought at first; that's a tiny hitbox!

Regardless of what Atlas you buy. I recommend running at least a standard 350 with endo. The standard 350 gives you 4 hs spots in the engine which would equate to 12 slots outside the engine and endo only costs 14 slots and gives you 5 more tons to play with, not to mention the extra speed. I think its definitely worth it in any atlas.

OH. OH. You just put together the pieces of my Atlas puzzle -- I wasn't seeing the space tradeoff correctly. 100x thank yous.

Also, I think you may have killed my yesterday <_<

Exactly. One Double Heat Sink is three slots. Might be worth the cost of extra tonnage.

You aren't using Smurfy yet are you.

Stop screwing around!

Better yet - see the 'discuss custom mechs' link on Smurfy's mech lab. I'm running the 'shotgun willy' -D atm, and doing far better than any build I put together on my own. Just working on tweaking my armor distribution to fit my experience (keep losing ballistics / RT first; need to slide armor forward, I think - suggestions?).
