Steps are in order of requirement:
Pre-Game requirements:
1) Have no life. Not literally, of course, because then you'd be dead. But essentially your entire weekend better be open if you want a good chance at winning this. You need at least 200 games to even remotely have a shot at the title, and really, more than 300 is for a realistic chance, unless you're playing a medium class that isn't used very often (for this particular tourney).
The reason: So that you increase your chances of everything below
2) Weapons, weapons, weapons. Bring nothing but the biggest and best.
The reason: The only thing that distinguishes you from every other schmoe in the tournament is how much damage you do and how much you can kill steal. That TAG that you use to help your team, scrap it. Helping your team is a negative. Unless you're using streaks, you shouldn't even have BAP, because that's a medium laser that could be had instead.
3) Either tank your Elo or find some helpful friends
The reason:
Elo - Playing against poorer players increases your chances of stomping them
Friends - While there are accusations of cheating and it was reviewed last time, no one is sure what they actually look for. Don't be obvious about it, switch your clan logos, alternate which people you're dropping with, and sync drop to your hearts delight. Having one top game with friend A and another game with friend B over the course of hundreds of games will probably not stand out! And if it does, hey, we know for the future right?
4) Multiple mechs of the same type:
The reason: To churn out the required games, you're going to need to be in and out as quickly as possible, and multiple mechs guarentee that you'll never be looking at the "not ready" light.
5) Have some modicum of skill
The reason: Even if you follow all of my tips for excellence, if you're a drooling monkey that still has their arms locked to the torso, you're probably not winning this.
In-Game:
1) SCREW your team
The reason: They are only there to soak up hits. You stand right behind that guy and let him get shot, you kill steal that mech a light has been working 3 minutes on. You SHOOT anyone that's on the enemy cap (you should be able to make up all the team damage by the end of the match). Block their shots with your body so that you can get that kill in
2) Don't play to win, play to hurt
The reason: While you do need to win to earn the maximal amount of points, you're looking to cripple mechs, not outright destroy them, unless not doing so will mean a teammate will kill it instead
3) Don't play to win, part 2: Never cap
The reason: Capping will not get you ANYWHERE in this tournament, in fact its a complete detriment as you set yourself for failure if theres any chance of a tiebreaker. Unless you're missing a leg, and arm, and only have a medium laser remaining, you hunt that last mech down and exploit every ounce of damage you can out of him.
4) KILL STEAL
The reason: Each kill is worth
5) HIT EVERYONE
The reason: Each grazed target is worth
6) Ignore Lights
The reason: Except for reasons 4 or 5, lights take too much work to kill, and don't take enough damage to really pad your stats. Unless you're streaking it, in which case you should go wear your dunce hat in a corner, the time wasted shooting unsuccessfully at that Jenner is time you could be shooting that unmoving highlander instead.
The luck:
Luck is pretty much the biggest factor in this game to win a tournament
What you need to happen and games to look out for
1) An enemy team that is good enough to not get destroyed by your team, but not enough to kill you
The reason: If your team gets stomped, that's a loss. But you need them not to be derpy enough to charge into the line and die within 20s so you can't even get a hit on everyone.
2) A friendly team that is good enough to win, but not enough to destroy the enemy team
The reason: Similar to above, if you team rolls 8-0 that doesn't give you enough time to rack up all the damage you need to win this thing.
3) Enemy team has to be fat, really, really, fat.
The reason: Fatter targets = more armor = more damage.
4) NOOOOOOOO NOT AN XL!!!! /cry
The reason: Each XL enemy drastically lowers your potential damage output
5) AFKs/DCs, a gift from god
The reason: Free damage. Seriously, wail away at a DCed atlas, get 900 points, profit, it's so easy a caveman could do it!
