Why A Locus?

Seriously...looking at the mech on Oosik's Irregulars Mech Lab, why put this mech in the game?

The Engine requires it to carry four additional heatsinks, even when maxed at 170. With Endo, Ferro, and max armor to an even tonnage (Head from 18 to 11), their is still only seven tons left over. That is enough tonnage for 4 MGs with (2 tons of ammo) and a MPL or ML. This mech is simply worthless.

So this begs the question: why add in this mech in the game let alone as a hero variant?

Additionally, if the mech is going to be added in the game and be any sort of useful, it has to break away from cannon, IE Jump jets ECM, no DHS cap, and a higher engine. Otherwise, this mech will be no more than a hangar queen.

Because it's iconic and it'll be fun to infuriate assault pilots while in a tiny tiny 'mech.

It won't. It doesn't have enough power to do that, nor survive a good alpha. It'll only serve the CapWarrior phase of MWO.

The energy or missile hardpoints versions will be annoying i reckon. But then again who knows what balance will be like by then.

it's a way to get people to spend more money on the phoenix package to get something decent instead

Remember that you have to commit 2.5 tons minimum for Streaks (SSRM2+1t ammo). Energy is not viable, because DHS consumes a lot of slots (remember that small engines hurt you crit-wise)... think what the Commando-2D has to deal with. So going SHS requires SMALL Lasers to be used... 1 medium laser is good enough for 10 SHS... so you do the math and see how viable the mech builds would be like.

so that there was a purpose to running a light mech, like scouting, recon or spotting for teammates that would earn you as much c-bills and xp equal to what you'd earn if your pure damage dealer than there would be a point.

But the way they have sensors and the meta game setup it completely glosses over the whole "Electronic Warfare" and cloak and dagger situations. Everything is resolved with the almighty "R" key.

So you are right, these light mechs are really only ever going to be novelties until they improve the game.

And Double machine gun DPS.

If 12v12 is on schedule... there might actually be a base defense force this time around in Assault. This would in fact make the Locust worse than DOA... since it can do very little to compensate for not having enough tonnage. We're talking about short range weaponry at best.

I don't usually pilot light mechs without jump jets, but it looks like it will be a fun run ride. it has 4 ballistic slots :)

Personally I am going to run an erLL and 2 machine guns (1 ton ammo total) for my available 7 tons.

Plus, for many of us old TT Commanders...the Locust has a special place in our hearts and memories.

One of the...no THE luckiest game I ever played by FAR was while playing a Locust.

you do realize how useful machine guns are now in decent ammounts right? yes they do suffer the non instant damage factor that alot of weapons do but that doesnt make them bad. if your in a circle fight and can keep your aim on a target thats non stop 4 dps per second of damage + a burst now and then from your 2 ML with ZERO worry of over heat.

again yes the fact its not an instant hit weapon does suck but it doesnt make MG worthless. try a 6 MG jager with 2 er ppc (or 2 LL) you end up doing more damage with the MG if you do it right and you only really use your ER ppc to close the gap.

Better yet try a Jager with 2 ER PPC's and a UAC5

If you have to stack 6 of something to consider it worthwhile....it's not.


If a weapon can't stand on it's own, it has no place in this game.

Actually that's impossible by definition, unfortunately.


Gauss Rifle: 15 tons
Ammo: 1 ton
Endo internals: 1 ton

That gives you 3 tons for an engine and external heat sinks. :)
