Because RobotJox killed the genre for all time.
RobotJox is brilliant! I'll not hear a bad word said about it Granted it could have been a lot better, but for some B movie its pretty good, and I love the robots. We need more like this.

I enjoyed the cartoons, but they could have done better. With the technology today, and the right storyline, it could be awesome!
Web series anyone?
Web series anyone?

Why not just take the gray death books?
You have the story of a young man losing his family
and planet, starting a rebellion and getting that planet back.
There aren't so many Mechs [budget below 200 million $] and you can bring the idea of Mechs
to the people as Grayson is just a trainee at the beginning of the
story. So the girl with the locust (lori?) could show him and the audience a lot.
If the movie is a financial success they can go on with sequels
and a bigger budget -> more Mechs bigger scenarios.
Just like Transformers did.

Having just read Decision At Thunder Rift, I also think this would make an excellent "welcome to battletech" movie. (which makes sense, since it was the first Battletech novel)
For the first 3/4rs of the book the biggest mech battle is, IIRC 3 on 1 (The very first battle, where Greyson's dad is killed)
Then most of the battles are 2 on 1 or 1 on 1 until the Dracs show up. Then you have the big climactic battle at Thunder Rift itself.
Lori is herself just an apprentice, but once Greyson gets picked up to help the locals they have him teaching a small class of mechwarriors to pilot the mechs captured from the bad guys, which is a perfect opportunity for a "this is how a mech works" montage.
I think the most complicated part of the movie would be explaining Trellwan's buggy day/night/year cycle, but for alot of moviegoers you can just handwave that as "it's an alien planet with really long days and nights".
