In a Victor, it seems to make the most sense. An XL gives the right combo of speed, firepower, maneuverability, and armor. I always get cored CT well before my sides even with damage spreading (twisting), I think I've died from a side blowout maybe once. The thing to remember is that a Victor is not the same type of assault mech as an Atlas or a Stalker, or even a Highlander. It has its own little niche, and when played well it does well.

DS (sniper)
XL350
Gauss
2 PPCs
JJs
9S (brawler)
XL380
AC/20
2 MLs
3 SRM4s
JJs
9K (universal - aka "Mini Metal")
XL330
Gauss
3 LLs
JJs
I've been having good luck with these builds. JJing combined with torso twisting is the key to survival with an XL engine, at least when solo PUGing (which is all I do). So far, I'd have to say the Victors are legit. They so outclass the Awesomes it's not even funny.

The VIctor 9K is still a work in progress, but hoping a low heat Guass/SRM build with a large engine will suffice.

Considering one of the VTR-9S's missile tubes is a 2, and the highest is 6? You're gonna have a bad time with that missile build

JJs are the key for brawling in my experience. I'm always jumping and twisting. I've soloed Atlases and (non JJ) Highlanders by continually jumping over them to stay out of their firing arc. But you're right, everyone's perception of what works is ELO dependent. The Victors may not be viable at higher ELOs.

What I found was that I was significantly faster then my pug friends... whilst I could solo most assaults, I found that I became too isolated because like most pugs, they refuse to intercept flankers or actually push isolated targets. Thus I had enough firepower in straight fights, I would tend to be decimated by 2 or 3 PPC Stalkers then being free to move over to LoS on me and begin hammering me whilst the rest of the team stood back.
Thus I needed a speedy build that could lay the pain, and the Dual UAC5 and triple SRM4's might make it a mini Atlas/HGN but it does rip other mechs apart whilst giving me a better chance of suppressing the enemy in return. I find light mechs love me because I grab assault mechs attention so in the brawl I have a light or 2 just sitting behind them stabbing them to death.

I ran into a similar problem when my hunchbacks started going 80. If you use your speed you can wind up isolated and a lone target tends to be an easy target. So I started only going around half speed to follow the slower assaults and let them "escort" me to the fighting area/brawl where I'd go full speed to close the gap or try and flank.
In my mind (haven't played a Victor yet) Victors would act as a leader and almost a bodyguard to a group of flankers. I can see a Victor coming to crash the enemies party with some Cataphract, Yen Lo Wang, and Hunchback friends. (Possible AC20 madness! ) Though I doubt a PUG would that coordinated.
I came up with a somewhat silly Victor-9B build the other day. Not sure if it will work, but if it does the mech could be a close range monster.

That's what I feel, I tend to follow the faster light's and mediums into early cap locations, there you find the enemy light's or medium's and can easily inflict some early heavy punishment. Throw in that you come slightly late you hammer isolated targets in the rear, all of a sudden you're the real threat for your friends to gut him from behind.
And funny you should mention flanking, did that earlier with a Wang, 2 Victor's (1 AC20 VTR-9B and mine the Guass+SRM VTR-9K) and a Hunchback... flushed their base and pulled 4 with us that our mobility ate piecemeal, whilst the other 4 on our team camped our own base and smashed the other 4 who tried to cap us out.
Looking at that build it would eat anything but won't have much staying power due to ammo and heat. Could be interesting though!

I often loose a side torso. I think people are actively looking for an XL.
I generally sneak into back rows and murder other Assaults. I think that is the primary purpose of the mech.

amidoinitright? I was thinking ER in case you need to snipe. But they can easily be swapped to standard for a pure brawly build.

Might want to swap one for a regular LL... preferably which ever one would be at the bottom, and have your ER being grouped with the LL, and having it's own seperate weapon group.
You would still get to damage things at high ranges, but generate less heat when you are brawling.

It would give the range required to do some damage and not be useless in the starting sniper war. This shall be fun...

yes, it's an unorthodox "support" mech, and,by support it means using it's speed and jump jets to gang up on mechs already engaged with your lance mates. it's not designed to lead the charge, but, overwhelm by concentration of force.
