If you want to experiment with your builds or try new mechs without spending any of your own MC or Cbills, log into the test server at the scheduled times.
Nothing you spend matters. This includes buying and trying hero mechs, so long as your MWO account has the necessary two days before the test. The snapshot PGI used of my account was from the day before.
My review on the test earlier today can be found in the responses below. If you haven't tried it, you should.
Next scheduled dates: 12 vs. 12 Thursday 25th July 10am - 12pm and 4pm - 6pm PST (LA time)
Since the money is explained as not mattering in the public test servers (anything you spend, buy, do, etc. does not affect your stats, your money, your account, or anything else), I've bought me a Victor and Dragon Slayer to see whether or not I'll want to get them in the future. So far loving the cockpit.
Oh and if you have to download and won't get it in time, remember there's a second scheduled 2 hours later today.

My first experience with the test server, from purchasing a Victor 9B with imaginary , rebuilding it from scratch and then fighting in 12 versus 12 combat with a 3 AC/2, 2 ML Victor 9B complete with lots of protective padding for my ammunition. (Sorry about my voice; I literally woke up and went immediately on to test!)
Multiple vids included here: Spoiler tag added to reduce scroll. If you're interested in the Victor's missile tubes it's important to watch the two missile boat Victor vids as I show you what happens when you swap tubes.
Spoiler
Later, I bought a Dragon Slayer with to try it out. Experimented, but fought with the build unchanged. I'll get it, but since I bought every other hero mech at full price, I think I'll wait until it goes on sale. Not because the mech is bad, but because getting them is expensive after awhile.
Then I tested the lance system. First match, I run into the current meta on the 12 versus 12 servers with one side being a little PPC + gauss heavy and the other side not so much. Second match is the actual test; I went about arranging the lances by mech class (light, heavy, assault) and gave an order or two. Sadly when you resign command your orders are instantly deleted.
I rebuild the 9B into a missile boat with 3 MGs and 2 SL for laughs. I perform stupidly good. Near the end I put my small lasers and MGs to use on a fresh cataphract 3D against his UAC/5, ER PPC, and other assorted weapons while he has LRM support assisting him.
Here I bought the Victor 9S for , make it into a missile boat because I found the tube arrangement interesting. I'm surprisingly thrilled with the results as I go up against other famous forum goers who frequent the new player help thread with 3 LRM-15s out of 17 tubes (distributed and fired as 10 tubes for the first LRM-15, 5 tubes for the second, 2 tubes for the third) backed up by 2 MGs and 2 small lasers. During this I go head to head with a 4 PPC stalker at point blank with stock Victor armor, think I can get him? Find out.

Thanks for posting the videos. Unless I develop a strange disease on Thursdays, these are squarely inside my workday, so I am unlikely to see 12 v 12 for quite some time.

The excessive heat you're experiencing is a proper heat threshold of 30 points. Because of MWO's erroneous system of a "rising heat threshold" per heatsink, if you've ever used 22 "dhs" on any mech before that's been fully pushed through the elite efficiencies, you're probably used to the estimated threshold of 130 or so (calculated without taking any cooldown speeds into effect when comparing the percentage immediately generated by 66 heat (6 ER PPCs), versus 100%, which according to a ratio calculator proclaims the heat must be right at 130 [mainly due to 20% additional threshold from pilot efficiencies), in addition to the faster cooling. This leaves "DHS" to be pretty well over 3 to 4 times superior than standard heatsinks.
Imagine if you had that threshold limit with only two-times faster cooling. Think you'd survive firing a 6 ER PPC boat even once? Personally I've been advocating for about the threshold capacity of 10 engine DHS + 5 1.4 DHS, as it seems to be a modest in between and on a stock mech with no unlocks that boils down to approximately 63 threshold with the same ratio calculator used. Throw that threshold as the start-all-end-all threshold for all mechs regardless of heatsink counts, and then have heatsinks only affect cooling rate just like real ones.
Paul says it'll nerf all mechs. It'd nerf all DHS, even if they put DHS back to literally 2.0 cooling rates versus the 1.0 cooling rates of standards. Heat would matter again. It'd also buff all standard heatsinks, and everyone would be on the same playing field when it comes to alpha strikes. The difference is the guy who spent 1,500,000 more will cool twice as fast. But then having twice as many standard heatsinks will allow the same thing.
At the moment, even if you have 44 standard heatsinks you can't get the threshold of the current implementation of 22 DHS. There's absolutely no excuse for that.
But that's a balancing thread issue. PGI seems content to ignore it.
These are fun to watch. Shocked anyone survived the first battle.
Second one, didn't even know there were that many FRRs out there. Always thought it was like some exclusive club. A trick with standard heatsinks is with so many players you can play it like a sports team (as if I know anything about sports). Pump in 6 mechs to the fight while 6 hang back, and when their heat gets high start swapping out. You can practically triple your cooling rate by literally shutting down, so when you withdraw the heated mechs they can shut down over a hill to 'disappear' as your other 6 guys flush in to swarm the fight, keeping their attention away from the heated teammates.
Third match; should've gone left. But I figure you were going for the hilarity factor of being butchered. Personally I think you should've brought at least some customized 2Ds. Still fun vids.

Include all the filters! seriously, nice vid
I totally tried to, but, but... there were 297 filters.

It'll be about an hour or two but uploading the other two vids from the 12 versus 12. My big focus was trying out Victors, so yeah. I'll run lights or mediums next time.
To be honest with those drops we weren't trying for coordination or to even win, just for the 'lol factor' of facing a proper 12 man with trial commandos, but your advice there would definitely increase our chances of winning when we decide to be stupid.
For the second video the Skjaldborg: Shieldwall of Rasalhauge found out we were playing commandos and decided to join us. They often willing to join in on general stupidity.
The third video was a drop that started about 6 minutes before the server got switched off so we were only concerned with getting to enemy quickly instead of any proper tactics.
that ac/2 arrangement looks awesome, lol iv always wondered what an entire team of commandos was like, ROfL wasn't expecting an entire team of trial commandos though, lol just curious how long did it take for you to find a match?? i have a feeling the mm had no idea wtf to do with you guys and eventually gave up on having close team weights
lol also, anyone else notice someone called the eridian dudes "pony humpers"??? XD
I'll have to be sure to recruit them for other adventures of fun.
In the meantime... Vids 4 and 5 are uploading, and a bit later today I'll upload more of the 6 SL, 2 MG Firebrand, a few other vids, and set about some more of the classic direct fire support rig complete with classic mechwarrior 2 music found here and here: I'm kind of interested to hear how it sounds with the new AC/2 sounds -- but for those vids and more, go check out my channel.

We found that it took, on average, about 20-40 seconds to match us against someone. Although I'd say that the pool for 12 mans on the test server was probably small enough that it matched us fairly quickly despite the lack of balance between the teams. Not much the MM can do if only 2 teams are looking to drop at one time, hmm?
Although when Skjaldborg dropped with 12 commandos we were matched literally instantly.

now imagine 12 commandos vs 12 commandos lol that battle would be worthy of the movie 300

Haha I owe you one for that Kon, good for you that you caught me at 80% heat when I just killed off the Cent. Revenge best serve cold etc
