A solo queue would be an awful change.
It punishes people who play with a friend or two (who are not necessarily perfectly co-ordinated military strategists) by forcing the matchmaker to try to find matches for them in a smaller player pool.

Uh.. no. What it does is open the doors wide open for players to exploit. The can, they do, and they ruin the game for those who truly are PUGs.
Case in point: Match screen loads. You see your own team. 6 people in your team are from the same faction....while not a direct indicator of a premade it usually puts up a red flag. Then you see the mechs they bring. Oh... look.... 4 of them are ECM Atlai. What are the odds? And look! The other 2 are ECM light/mediums.
The match is nothing but a quick steamrolling of the opposing team...they are a mix of assaults and mediums that have very different weapon builds.

It has to match the right team sizes together, while also trying to balance ELO and weights.
There are only 2 possible outcomes:
1. The queue gets longer
2. The matchmaker criteria are relaxed resulting in less balanced matches.

There IS a premade queue. People are not using it. Why? They cannot roll over other teams and make wads of cbills. That is the ONLY reason why. This nonsense of queues being too long is just an excuse not to use the premade queue. The ridiculous amounts of premade teams in pug queue just shows there's plenty of people to populate the premade queue.
... but its more profitable and more ego-stroking to drop into pug teams where they have a significant advantage.

You do not punish people for playing a multiplayer game with their friends.
So.. its ok to punish those who are playing this game just because the people that play with their friends are unwilling to use the queues specifically set up for them? Seriously now... no matter how you try justify it the fact remains unchanged: Premades in Pugs is an exploit of the ELO and the matchmaker system and it gives the premade team an unfair advantage before the match even starts.
There are nights when you can see the same premade groups in matches over and over again... personally I just warn the opposing team at match start, tell their mech types and weapon loadouts that I'm aware of... stand aside and not participate in the match in their favor. I TK their legs off when the brawling begins as well.
