Anjian I pug 99% of the time. And it is all 100% in the assault class. I have had about 1000 games on my Atlas DDC. Adding the Victor and playing as a pug with it I have the same results as Bishop Steiner and several other people I talked to. So yes its not an stand in front of the other person and shoot them until one of you die mech I do not even play that way with my Atlases. I can stand in front of people and torso twist and shoot out there AC20 first etc. But I would rather not just stand in front of them. I would rather lumber around them and shoot them in the side or back in my Atlas. And assault does not mean just stand in front of something. Really it just means " The concluding stage of an attack in which close combat occurs with the enemy.". And in MWO it just means a weight class. And I find the Victor does great at the close combat. I just try and do it from angles that are better for me than the other mechs
But really it seems that your just have your idea of what assault means. And the Victor does not fit into it. " As Assaults go, assaults are supposed to be either the wedge or your formation or the fire support, and the Victor is neither.". The Victor was designed as fast assault to jump in and out of battle and move around people. It was not designed to be the wedge or fire support. Thats why it has less armor and more speed but still packs a big punch. In other words it works great if used for what it is designed for.
I am not saying it is a bad mech. I got a number of 5 and 6 kill games with it, and all PUG, with 230 plus pings. The fact that I got them in one or two days after buying them speaks a lot, because I don't get that kind of kill levels with mechs I bought so soon after. It takes a while for me to master a mech completely. In fact, the first sortie I got with my 9B, with only an AC20 and 2 LLAS, I made two kills outright, one of which is a close range duel with a Dragon.
Oh I think its only the Atlas that plays like stand there in front and shoot till you die. Maybe you can do it with a Stalker too, if you load it up with SRM6s and LLAS. The Stalker is a great breakthrough piece if used that way. And the Awesome is great fire support along with the Stalker LRM boat.
The Highlander isn't fought by rushing in and fighting toe to toe. It only has 80 points in its center torso that happens to be an easy target. Its fought by sniping in then supporting that wedge when that rush happens.
Every mech in the game have close range ability. Nothing special there. Except for the Awesome, where its dicey but then I have seen Awesomes during the height of the SRM power that just splats away targets using SRMs.
Victors can be great snipers also, if you know how to use it. Having an XL engine is less of a disadvantage at longer ranges than at shorter ranges. Since the pop tart ability has been preempted, the Victor still make a great hit and fade sniper. When I am driving my Victor, I intentionally hunt down Catapults and Jagermechs for a reason. I am not worried about Atlases. I am more concerned with Dakka Dakka Jagers and Catapult LRM boats, which is why I snipe and take them out fast from a distance.
Please note that my Victors are all Early Birds, two of them, bought with MC. That is in addition to my Dragon Slayer which I bought in the first day.
