[Sorry mods in advance, tried to post this where most appropriate - Game balance = community etc.]

Backstory: I like many of you, have been a fan of battletech, mechwarrior since I was very young. Today as an active gamer and parent I do believe that a good games community makes a huge difference in enjoying a game and greatly helps when introducing new generations to the experience.

Today I gave my very young son the opportunity to ride shotgun with me while we played this game together. I asked the 11 other players to "Go easy on me, my son is learning how to play." Perhaps it was foolish of me to think that "hey maybe these guys will be awesome and be sportsmanlike. Especially to a child playing a game for the first time with his dad."

Sadly there were a few who took this as an opportunity to talk smack. With lines line "I will feast on his soul with my AC/20" or "Sheesh why not just hang a pork chop around his neck"
Thankfully my son did not notice or read this. Unfortunately it sadly speaks volumes of the trend going on. With the "Ready Police" and TKing on the rise. Even the "Press Alt +F4 to ready up faster" is still present. I still continue to remain hopeful that this game's community will improve over all.

I here by ask and challenge this community of new fans and old alike to BE better,
to one another in particular to the NEW members, for the sake of improving this game. I want this game to flourish and I'm sure you do too.

I'm going to continue to do my part, will you?

You really shouldn't advertise when someone is new to the game, it's like hanging a big target on their mech. Most of the "mean" players probably don't even read the forums anyway...

Exactly why I don't get to game with my youngsters on a few games. I'd just not announce it next time and if you can find a group to drop with when you have him with ya. I tend to find less of that attitude when you're running with premades and actual units.

rolly:

That's the internet. It's full of anonymity which gives people a free pass to be jerks. That sort of behaviour you experienced would happen in any game if you were to make the same request.

You have MY support rolly, but then, I always did lean toward the lawful-good side of things.

Sorry buddy, since you have a kid i take it you are 25+. If you have not noticed the internet trolling trend that started a few years ago pay attention. There are probably very few games anymore where its not just one giant smack talking troll fest. Go read the forums on any game out there they are almost all the same. As far as you telling people someone new is behind the wheel, its hard to not shoot the new guy, remember its a game!

why start with a good game, then take a step backward?

My 10 year old does fine with builds I make for him...
My 13 year old does good with builds I 'help' him with...
My 16 year old is genuinely good with builds I 'consult' on...

When I see newbs in trials...it never ceases to amaze me how bad some people are.

Society doesn't think nor enforce the ideas that give reason to respect people.

I suspect your result would be gotten by most others.

How dare you OP! Ask the people online to be more polite! How dare you indeed!

But seriously, you are asking a lot. Sadly.

Well you won't get that kinda {Scrap} from me if I see you in game. Sorry about your bad experience.

Nice! I have a 6 year old daughter that -loves- playing in Sarah's mech. I started with the opposite tactic to you - I didn't boradcast the fact that a primary schooler was in charge of the pointy end of our giant robot. Unfortunately, she's also doing very well at school in her reading. We were playing one night when I heard her spelling out a particularly hilarious almost swear word... which I could almost FEEL her brain storing away in a priority location for future reference.

So now, I'll usually announce that there's a child at the con. This usually works, but every now and again you'll get some of the more nefarious types that use this as an opportunity to try and broaden her swear word vocabulary. In a way, this is good, because I get to teach her an important lesson; that even though there are lots of nice people playing the game, there are also some {Scrap} ones.

Just like real life!

While I fully agree that people online should be more polite, I also take minor offence to the OPs request because it comes off as "My child is special, please treat him differently."

If you want to enhance a child's experience with the game, give them a Jenner and cheer them on as they zoom around the map at full tilt, kids love fast things zappy lazors. If you want to get sassed in chat, then ask that everyone else give your child special treatment.

So many inconsiderate people playing MWO.

This was never an issue for me in MW4 or in MWLL. I would occasionally get my young niece playing with me, and players in those games were indeed nice and went easy, even allowing her a "well earned kill" here and there. if any of those guys are reading, thankyou. If there were more people like you, this community would be much larger and a much better place to play.

Last night, i got a phone call just after launch, and the folks on the server allowed me to shutdown and come back as soon as i was able. Thanks guys  Its great to know there are some good people left in the community.

Its a shame that there are so many other people who are just too small minded (possible other smalls as well) to give a beginner a chance to get into the game, and would rather chase away another would be player. It really hurts the community long term, and its going to kill off the chances of this game succeeding.

No, it doesn't come off that way.

There is exactly zero in the grammar/meaning or word choices in the OP that indicates anything even remotely like the meaning that the guy thinks his kid is somehow a better human being and should thus be treated better than others.

I started to get really upset at all the negativity in team chat and on the forums. Then school started up again and it was an excellent excuse to step away for a bit. I'm back doing some PUG during fall break.

Once you decide to play only games you enjoy, and stop playing them if they make you angry or sad, you start to see things differently. I can't do anything about the overall surly, immature, and trollish state of the community. I can only have fun and try to be as class-act as I can.

I accept your challenge, and I hope others will follow suit.
