I too wish the community as whole would be more sportsmanlike. Personally I appreciate teammates letting me know that they are new because I can compensate for it, or I can be understanding for if/when something stupid happens. Also, if I die first, I can spectate and offer advice.

If you're my enemy, however, I probably won't change my usual playstyle; an enemy is still an enemy and I don't really differentiate new enemies from skilled enemies, I just shoot. I'll tone my language down for a younger player though.

I'm sorry your experence was not the greatest. As many are pointing out the internet is often a less-than-cheerful place, though I don't know why we accept this as "the way it is". I for one won't continue the trend. Challenge accepted.

I could care less about your kid.
Broadcasting that he/she is at the helm demonstrates your desire for others to parent on your behalf.
Modify your own behavior before asking strangers to modify theirs.
Perhaps you should stop playing and spend more time with your child.
I am not a babysitter.

The only reason I ever start any of these threads (anymore) is to troll (because it's the right thing, but impossible to enforce/get across...) because internet people are children, ages 2-102.. and nobody is going to care about this "cause."

(I won't add to the problem, as I already don't.. but these threads are kinda pointless.)

So many inconsiderate people playing MWO.

This was never an issue for me in MW4 or in MWLL. I would occasionally get my young niece playing with me, and players in those games were indeed nice and went easy, even allowing her a "well earned kill" here and there. if any of those guys are reading, thankyou. If there were more people like you, this community would be much larger and a much better place to play.

Inconsiderate behaviour tends to always come out in larger populations. MWLL's community was relatively niche, and therefore nicer.

[Sorry mods in advance, tried to post this where most appropriate - Game balance = community etc.]

Backstory: I like many of you, have been a fan of battletech, mechwarrior since I was very young. Today as an active gamer and parent I do believe that a good games community makes a huge difference in enjoying a game and greatly helps when introducing new generations to the experience.

Today I gave my very young son the opportunity to ride shotgun with me while we played this game together. I asked the 11 other players to "Go easy on me, my son is learning how to play." Perhaps it was foolish of me to think that "hey maybe these guys will be awesome and be sportsmanlike. Especially to a child playing a game for the first time with his dad."

Sadly there were a few who took this as an opportunity to talk smack. With lines line "I will feast on his soul with my AC/20" or "Sheesh why not just hang a pork chop around his neck"
Thankfully my son did not notice or read this. Unfortunately it sadly speaks volumes of the trend going on. With the "Ready Police" and TKing on the rise. Even the "Press Alt +F4 to ready up faster" is still present. I still continue to remain hopeful that this game's community will improve over all.

I here by ask and challenge this community of new fans and old alike to BE better,
to one another in particular to the NEW members, for the sake of improving this game. I want this game to flourish and I'm sure you do too.

I'm going to continue to do my part, will you?

You have to be 13 years old to play this game.

It is also an online game played by old men. Have you heard what the preteens say on xbox live? This is as childfriendly as online gaming will ever get.

You really did ask for it dude. THIS IS THE INTERNET

Go play Mechwarrior Tactics with them thanks, and quit giving me a 6yr old as a teammate. I'm not paid to carry and wipe your kids bottoms.

Sorry to hear about that!
When I'm piloting lights, I usually send myself out and harass mechs in the back line, but often I find newer players that are just too obvious. So instead, I untarget them so LRM's don't come down on them and I position myself mainly in his view. I walk slow, let him hit me. then i start circling around him. Usually it's an atlas, so in chat I just say his name and tell him when mechs are going around him in circles, walk backwards in circles then torso twist to put them in your view.. Some get it, some don't, some don't read it, and etc. But it is noticable, and I to try to help. It's harder to hit moving things, so I don't go as fast, I walk, I stand. I do everything I shouldn't be doing in my book, but I'm following a different book that tells me to give him a chance, and help him get a feel for his controls, I use my weapons, but I knick his arms, I miss a lot, and on purpose. But it's good to watch the new player start to get a hang of how to control his mech, and to fire, and so on, then I turn around and leave.

I dunno what good it does, or what the other person is thinking. but when they fire at me with lasers and all they do is draw a circle around me... well.. I think they need some practice with easier targets, and I have no problem to oblige.

Anywho, hopes this helps give you some faith!

Thank goodness this is just a game where anybody can have fun playing it, right? I doubt you even dropped with him anyways. Your elo rating is probably the highest in the entire game. ever. and you're the bestest player on every team you join hands down. And you can take on 12 mechs at once and just kill em all can't you?

That's normal behavior for the internet, or anywhere else that immature persons hang out with minimal supervision (like a 3rd grade school yard).

The only thing that can change it is heavy moderation from a person in authority, which in this case is PGI, and it's not going to happen.

No that's why I don't need or want some stupid 6 yr old backing me up shooting me in the back ruining my experience. Go play a single player game for that {Scrap}. It's like that stuid kid that cries in a movie you and your kid are hated by everyone. I'm just the guy that is willing to say it and don't care if you think it's mean. It's a team game and a 6 yr old is not part of my team he is a problem.

Quite the vast amount of assumptions there. Did OP's son shoot you in the back?

I'm curious, what you think is worse:
"6yr" old stomping around the battle field having fun
or a 4man premade that team kills the Company Commander for lance swapping?

It's called putting in an IGNORE and PROFANITY filter in the game. I understand that was a standard feature in 1990's MUD's. It might be too hard for Piranha's staff to code. I mean it only took them a year to allow you to hold down the backspace to delete a string of text.

Lol priceless. I've often wondered if PGI is really that busy and tied up, or they have some serious programmer issues there. I am mostly leaning toward the latter though.
One thing that is concerning though is the amount of back-log in their "Phase 2" development work flow.
From the october update:

Quote

  • In design 2 – Feature brief has been presented to stake holders for vetting.

Quote

In Design 2
  • Ready Screen
  • Loyalist Life
  • Inner Sphere
  • CW Economics
  • Mercenary Unit Assets
  • Mercenary Unit Logistics
  • Contracts
  • Planetary Warfare
  • Front Warfare
It's likely their main bottle neck. If they announced this info 2 months ago, the "Backspace string code" would probably still be in phase two.

I dunno, they got a fairly decent one for their forums XD

... really does make ya wonder why there isn't one in the game itself though...

(why yes - I can think of several reasons why)

I love all people but this just doesn't seem to me like a little kid environment... even most people saying rude stuff is just people goofing off but you have to be old enough to understand that on the internet in general...

You definitely can find the right people in MWO to play with that you like to play with but random public anything at all on the internet is not generally going to be that way.

Baby On Board? ... ... ... Yea... ... ... Hard for me to come up with a reason to give two flying rat-farts in the wind... I'll target the first thing that makes itself a target for me... I'm not going to bother trying to keep that it's your big-headed nephew who is behind the wheel this time around. Otherwise, don't introduce your children to online gaming so damn early. My aunt's 'mentally handicapable' child plays the Nintendo DS without any hindrance and loves the ever living eff out of it... Without any chance of adverse influences.

Yeah this too... they are adding a ton of new stuff but some underlying base features are missing...

I honestly wouldn't have declared it launch when you still can't scroll back in chat and stuff like that...

I can't wait for phoenix though
