When I was playing MW4 we had a guy in our unit who decided to bring his little brother into the unit. His brother was about 9 years old. Within a month, he was a competitive pilot who was a big help to not only our league games, but also in training. For some reason he just picked it up rather quickly. As I said, I'm not sure how old your kid is, but if he's around that age or even a little older, he'll pick up MechWarrior faster then you did. Be prepared to get pwned by him in the future.
Now as for the insults and unsportsmanlike comments that your team or opponents might have said. Yeah that needs to be toned down. This community is pretty toxic compared to what I used to see in the 'old' days. I remember being more respectful to my opponents then my own unitmates (I was an officer, so I had to keep them in line). Saying good luck to each other and complimenting each other at the end for giving a good fight, win or lose.
You don't see that anymore. And the reasons for it is mainly due to the cultural shift since the turn of the millennium. You're not going to be able to change it. And that is because its not rooted in just MWO or online gaming only. But rather in society itself. People simply don't wish to be polite to one another anymore. You see it in the news all the time.

If I had dropped in with you and you had said I'm teaching my young son to play. i would had ordered my lance to watch over you for the whole match. as i would like to think the community would grant me the same in return.
on the subject on team killing i have even seen TK's break out over people not readying up its ludicrous... recently it's been terrible and getting worse.
i am not one to mouth off in game i just remember names them become my primary target when possible ;-)
this is a simulation, simulation are also meant to include a sense of honour.
i hope people accept your challenge. i have since day one closed BETA we need to be better

Welcome to the internet, as I new father i would never allow my child who was to immature to handle what they were going to be exposed to exposure to it. Perhaps your daughter is far to young to be playing multiplayer online games... perhaps you should go play snakes and ladders with her instead of playing MWO.
I don't mean to be rude, but having insane expectations from a random online community puts you at fault for the exposure to your daughter... its not the communities fault.

The Internet (and online games) isn't a nice place, and that there is the reason.
Best of luck in playing with your son, but don't get your hopes up on people changing their ways to accommodate you; anonymity and an audience ensures that many of them won't.

People are stupid. Groups make people dumber. When groups are anonymous, it makes you wish for Ebola outbreaks.
That said, find a group to hang with. Check out the merc units, or faction groups. Find one that is family friendly and not into "srus bnsgs" like some. Or form a training group. Advertise for newbies etc, no Richard Craniums allowed.

On a good note, you just continue to reinforce my original point.

Seriously? He is not going to be good so he can't play the same game as me? Wow. Some people's views amaze me.

1. You cannot reasonably expect people not to play to win.
2. Advertising something like that is almost like soliciting for comments in online games. You have played other online games before I take it? Surely you understand how something like this is prime flame bait? Especially in online pvp based fps titles where you have little or no meaning to any of the other players around you? (I know I am being harsh, but this is a fact)
3. I agree that a small % of comments I see in game are in bad taste and can go too far.

Ok, looks like somebody's Irony Detector is being jammed by ECM.

If he played on his own account, instead of his dad's it wouldn't be a problem, as they most likely wouldn't be in the same ELO bracket.
Or maybe they would anyways, considering how the matchmaker works around here...
It's kinda like an some tennis player ranked #20th in the world getting sick and having his amateur tennis player friend step in for him...he's probably gonna get killed at that competition level. Yes, I realize that one example is a video game and the other is about a professional athletics but the analogy is still the same.
Either way, this is pretty much the state of the internet nowadays...just wait until PGI puts in VOIP into the game without a mute feature...

I thought about it, but I can never find the strips I want in their archive.... and I was leaning more toward tryin to help the guy some (from a different direction though I suppose...

Eh...well I can only assume you mean 'mob mentality' with this. Unfortunately not really relevant to this subject. Groups can actually make people better in this game imo ie. teamwork ftw. As for people being stupid...eh, maybe however I feel that 'people are ignorant' would be more accurate.
